Brazil
Presented by
Varig and Embratur
The
information on this site may not be
reproduced in any form on the Internet
without express written permission from EDC.
The first exhibit
encountered on the right is Brazil,
celebrating its 500th year since being
discovered. A giant rainbow stretches
across the front of the exhibit. A sign
hangs in the center of the rainbow
reading "Experience Brasil"
(the Portuguese spelling). Through the
rainbow is a green field with 66 numbered
yellow circles on the floor. Guests pick
up small paddles when entering the field
and work as a team to direct a boat down
the Amazon river and then to play
Brazil's national sport, futebol (what
Americans call soccer). To steer the boat
or get your goalie in the right spot to
block the soccer ball, each person must
turn the green side of the paddle one way
or turn the yellow side of the paddle in
another direction. Sensors in the floor
detect which way the paddle is turned and
averages the results of all the guests to
move the boat or the goalie. While the
game is not running, a Brazilian quiz
runs on the center screen. The costumes
worn by the Brazilian cast members were
donated by the Brazilian Olympic
Committee.
To the right
side of the rainbow, we can walk through
the Brazilian rainforest. Groups of
padded columns illustrated with images of
birds and animals are meant to be pushed
and jumped into. This force causes a
sound of the rainforest (bird, animal, or
insect) to be heard. The back wall has TV
screens showing images of and facts about
Brazil. Turning down the black lit
hallway to the left, illustrations of
costumed dancers line both sides.
Streamers are hung overhead. These
represent Carnaval - a huge festival held
every year. More TV screens are found at
the end of the hallway. Another set of
padded columns are encountered - only
these are covered with images of
Carnaval. When hit, sounds of
noisemakers, bells, and whistles are
heard. The wall on the right side is a
mural with giant letters spelling out
Carnaval, scenes of Brazil, and people
dancing. Exiting through the blue
streamers and steam, we are back in the
village.
Scotland
Presented by
Scotland the Brand and Scottish Enterprise
Across the way is Seeing
Scotland in a New Light. This
exhibit features several miniature golf
challenges since golf was invented in
Scotland. If a ball successfully lands in
the hole, a sign or image lights up
revealing a fact about something invented
in Scotland. The center section contains
four holes that lead up ramps behind an
enclosed glass window. Making a hole on
this one sends the black lit ball through
an elaborate maze lighting up signs of
famous Scottish inventors along the way.
Examples of Scottish inventions displayed
here are penicillin, first television
transmission, fiber optics, and first
cloning of an animal - Dolly the sheep. A
white image of a cross between a tartan
design and a circuit, mixing the
traditional and modern, is projected onto
the floor and some of the golf holes. The
far end of the exhibit contains three
terminals that allow us to learn More
about the Inventors, Explore Scotland,
Design Tartan, or select What Would you
Create? This interactive experience is
narrated by Scottish poet Robert Burns.
According to the Epcot 2000 Commemorative
Program, the tartan costumes worn by the
Scottish cast members is a new pattern
designed for the Royal Yacht Britannia
which now resides near Edinburgh. The
tartan is available for sale at Gifts
from the World.
