Spirit of
Aloha Polynesian Luau
The Luau
has been a tradition of the Polynesian Resort since the very beginning. The
show recently went through several changes in 2003- as well as extensive
modifications to Luau Cove. The previous dinner show offered a luau and
entertainment that a tourist might see on a visit to Hawaii. The new show
guests are not tourists. They are villagers gathering together to celebrate
the return of Leilani, a local girl who had left the islands to attend
school. Throughout the luau we meet all of her friends that she grew up
with. The new script is filled with comedy, dancing, familiar Hawaiian
songs, and some music from the film Lilo & Stitch.

"There
I made the 8pm seating of the new Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show (1 week old,
replacing the Polynesian Luau). Although it rained off and on during the
afternoon, it was nice and clear as our hostess told us the story of Lani, a
bright and popular island girl who went to school in California and returned
home unsure of her roots after experiencing the big city world. Of course,
through a number of cultural dances including the exciting hula and fire
dance, Lani rediscovers where she came from and discovers she can be a part
of both worlds.
During this 2 hour show I tried Pele's Fire Punch (Volcano Goddess' blend of
light rum, dark rum, banana liquor, blackberry brandy, pineapple juice and
grenadine serviced with a red glow cube. Appetizers included pineapple
coconut bread, tropical mixed greens with mango-poppy seed dressing and
sweet golden pineapple. The main course consisted of island barbecued pork
ribs, lanai roasted chicken, Polynesian rice and fresh seasonal vegetables.
A glass of Copper Ridge Chardonnay was included as was dessert - Kilauea
Volcano Delight. And it was delightful."
"The
show was incredible! Nine dancers, in front of a live band, performed dances
from a variety of Polynesian islands. My favorite part had to be the fire
dance from Togo. It was amazing! "
"It's
completely different in the beginning, very upbeat and more up to date with
the dress and dance and it's more of a theatrical type performance with a
story line.
The second half of the show they do the dances from the different islands
like they used to. The ending is once again, very upbeat and lively. They do
the Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride song from Lilo and Stitch and have a dance
to it. The food is pretty much the same fare but prepared a little
different, (Coconut bread, salad, roasted chicken, ribs, fried rice, saluted
fresh vegetables and dessert). I enjoyed it."
"We
did the Poly luau and really enjoyed it. I didn't have high expectations for
the food - I was expecting to pay for the show, and the food just sort of
came along for the ride. I was surprised. "
"I
chose Luau because the Poly is just gorgeous, my 7 year old loves hula
dancers and I really wanted a "dress up" night. I made matching long
Hawaiian dresses for me and my girls, with little shawls to match. We caused
quite a stir (esp. the three year old "walking like mommy" in her "high"
heels) and were brought up on-stage for a little special dance. We had a
blast."

"Book
early, folks, and you get one of the best seats in the house. We had the
large round table in the center of the room and they danced around us during
the show. DH was the first person they slammed a bucket of food in front of
when we were being served and the spotlight was totally on him. I thought he
would have a heart attack. Our Six Bits was one of the best we have ever
seen and we ate and laughed so much that night. I couldn’t recommend HDD any
higher – if you are celebrating a special event or have the extra money, go
for it."
"We
just got home this week, and the Hoop de Doo was THE highlight of our entire
trip. We sat on right against the stage, the "actors" kept making eyes at my
son, and my 9 year old daughter was laughing so hard she was crying! It was
soooo much fun, just like everyone says! The food wasn't fancy but it was
tasty, I don't have a single complaint about the entire evening. It was a
great time. "
"The
Hoop Dee Dooooooo--was a blast!!! My five year old daughter loved it and my
husband was brought up on stage to be part of the show and still talks about
it. The food was very good and we can't wait to go again. Yeeee-haaaaa."
"Personally
I think it's a great show, worth every penny of the money, and the food is
great! It's not gourmet, but it's some of the best fried chicken I've had,
and the strawberry shortcake is super yummy!"

"It's
a huge open-air barn type shelter. There are long picnic tables surrounding
the center dance floor. There is no hostess to take you to a table. As you
arrive you get to choose where you will sit. Guests who arrive first,
obviously, get first pick."
"Well
I went to Mickey's backyard BBQ Last October and it was wonderful. You got
to Eat some great food and an American Flag Cake and Mickey, Minnie, Goofy,
and Pluto were there and they all had great Cowboy outfits Pluto even had a
scarf. It was great."
"The
food is good- lots of ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, etc. They have a live
band playing country music. They teach line dancing and everyone who
participates has LOTS of fun. The characters come too- Mickey, Minnie, Goofy
and Chip & Dale. If you have little ones who'd like to see them, they spend
some time signing autographs and posing for pictures during the band's
breaks. It's worth the time and money IF you want to dance and interact with
the characters."
