The beach access is indeed for guests staying at the resort. In years past, especially during special event fireworks, guests were asked to show their resort room keys.

I would call and make a formal complain so perhaps they'll start enforcing the rule again.

It has nothing to do with being a 'snob'. Deluxe resort guests pay a lot of money to have the amenities of the beach and views.
