Bed bugs are white? I thought they were black. I've always been checking the seams of the mattresses for black moving bugs. Are the bed bugs visible to the naked eye without an ultraviolet light? I want to be sure I'm actually checking correctly! Trip is 38 days away!

Although gross, its a necessary post about how to protect yourself. I just would hope that Disney (and every other hotel for that matter) would check mattresses themselves between guests checking in and checking out. It wouldn't take long and they would become experts at what to look for.
And stop those crawly bugs on your posts... they making me itch!!!

Thank you all for the best wishes. It is painful, but my doctor said I'm half way through it already.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown and vary in size, but are typically about the size of an apple seed. And yes, you can check for them just using a flashlight at night around the edges/underside of the mattress.
Personally, I've never seen any evidence of them at WDW.

Up in your area of Jersey my sis is a health inspector and has to deal with people's bed bugs a lot. The babies are white/yellowish-close to the color of a mattress. Adults are brown and after feeding are reddish brown. Any kind of light will do. On my honeymoon in Hawaii the car we rented had them. I found them when we were parking our car at night I got out and closed the door so the light went off....the only thing was we had parked near a street light and I was able to see them coming out on the back seat. They are the size of an appleseed. So yes the brown ones can be seen with the naked eye....the white ones can too but you just have to look harder. I have no idea how we didn't bring them home with us but thank god. I am a bug freak and hate them tremendously so any size bug will catch my attention. After the third time of me trying to show them to my hubby he saw them too....it was just harder for him because they are tiny.....
On the mattress look for black streaks. Look like dirt streaks.....Look for them in crevices, headboard etc. BEFORE bringing your suitcases in. I always go to the room first and check out the beds....wherever I go....

Wait, I want to be sure I understand. Do I have to check for them in the dark? Can I just walk in the room when we check in during the day and see them on the mattress?

yes...you can rather effectively check for them on the mattresses during the day...because it is during the daylight hours that they tend to congregate in their "nesting" spots...they are largely nocturnal creatures and thus at night they get active and go out in search of something to eat.
But when you check your bed(s)....be sure to check all the way around the mattress...lots of the time they will not be everywhere, but will congregate at just one spot.

Ok..this is good to know., I don't usually check all around the mattress. Thank you.

I just had that also a few months ago, started on xmas day and it's no fun. Thought I just had a bug bite then it quickly turned into this large rash on just half of my neck. I can see how you would think it was from bed bugs because I kept thinking what could bite me that bad. The burning feeling does not go away even after the rash clears up.

How long does the burning feeling last? Are you still dealing with it?
I noticed you're over in Troy...I'm in Brighton, must be a Michigan thing right now!

Sorry to hear about the shingles. I figure anything they push narcotics for is something I do not want to experience.
