June 14, 1895 – Cliff Edwards, the voice of Jiminy Crickett in Disney’s classic “Pinocchio” and the voice of Jim Crow in Dumbo,” was born in Hannibal, Missouri.
June 14, 1906 – Actor/dancer Gil Lamb was born in Minneapolis, Mn. His Disney credits include the live-action films “The Boatniks,” “The Love Bug,” “The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit,” “Blackbeard’s Ghost,” and “The Gnome Mobile.”
June 14, 1909 – Singer-actor Burl Ives, who appeared in Disney’s 1963 film “Summer Magic,” was born in Hunt, Illinois.
June 14, 1910 – Evelyn Henry, one of the unsung heroines of animation’s past, was born in Alberta, Canada. First hired by Disney in 1932, she worked as an inker on the Silly Symphony shorts, she acted as a supervisor for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” During the production of Snow White, Evelyn married future Disney Legend Claude Coats, a background painter for the studio.
June 14, 1916 – Actress Dorothy McGuire, who appeared in Disney’s 1960 film “Swiss Family Robinson,” and the 1963 “Summer Magic,” was born in Omaha, Ne.
June 14, 1951 – The Disney TV special “Operation Wonderland” aired. Walt presents clips and interviews from his next film “Alice in Wonderland.”
June 14, 1958 – The “Columbia Sailing Ship” was christened in Frontierland at Disneyland. It is a full-scale replica of the 1st ship to carry the American Flag around the world, at a cost of $300,000 to build.
June 14, 1958 – The “Alice in Wonderland” attraction opened in Disneyland’s Fantasyland. (Actress Kathryn Beaumont, who was the voice of Alice in the 1951 movie, also provided the voice for the attraction. (Closed Sept. 6, 1982)
June 14, 1959 – The Disneyland Alweg Monorail System, the 1st urban monorail system in the U.S., began operating in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. Vice President Richard Nixon and his family were on hand for the dedication of the “Highway in the Sky.”
June 14, 1959 – The “Matterhorn Mountain” along with its “Matterhorn Bobsleds” and “Monorail” opened at Disneyland’s Fantasyland.
