    Default Bringing medicine on plane

We're leaving in a few days and flying on Jet Blue. I have lots of medicine to bring - kids have flouride vitamins, daily vitamins, I take pre-natals....I carry tums, advil etc....

Is it okay to pack these in my purse or carry-on in zip locks or do I need to keep the medicine in their actual labled bottles? I was hoping just to bring just what we need in zip locks so as to have less to bring. Or should I just put them in our luggage?

    Thanks.

    Kristina

You should never carry medicine in anything other than it's original packaging. (sorry, I work in a pharmacy and see people mix medications all day long... then need help figuring out what "these little pills are") It is illegal to carry some prescription medications in unlabeled bottles.
It sounds like everything you are bringing is OTC meds. We usually pack anything that can be replaced in our luggage and carry on all prescription medications.

If any of your meds are prescription, you will need to keep them in their original packaging and carry them on in a one quart zip-loc bag. I believe you are restricted to one zip-loc bag per passenger.

For the non-prescription meds, you can carry them in the ziploc mentioned above, but I'd be more inclined to check them, since they're fairly easily replaceable. If you do bring your non-prescription as carry on, you should keep them in their original container....but keep in mind they've all got to fit in that ziploc bag.

Per the TSA web site (and our experience), medications - OTC or prescription - do not have to be in your one-per-person quart-sized ziploc bag. However, if they are not in your quart bag, you need to declare them to the security screener. We've always just placed all of our medications in a separate, additional ziploc bag(s) that we pulled out of a carry-on and placed in the screening bin alongside all our other items. You are not required to have medication in its original packaging, but it is recommended by the TSA to make things go smoothly. By following these practices, we've never had any issues.

I'm not sure that I am allowed to post the link to the TSA web page about medications here, but if you go to the TSA web site, just type medications in the search box at the top of the page.

This rule applies to liquids and gels. All of the pills do not have to go in the ziplock.

I take an injection that comes in a pre-filled syringe. I did not have to include this in my Ziplock, I only had to present it in its original packaging to the person screening.

Don't you wish they would make these rules a little easier to understand?
I was very careful about going on the website and making sure I did everything right since my meds had to be refrigerated and I had gel packs also. One airport let me through with no questions (did not even LOOK at the meds when I handed it to them) and the other questioned me and pulled me aside for screening. Weird.
