I'm baaack!!! Just a couple more reports to go!!
Day EIGHT- Saturday, June 30th
Well, this morning is our last program. #10 out of 10. Whew! What a week it's been.
We woke to reveille at 6am, had a quick breakfast- but didn’t have to make lunches today. Today we all get our $10 for lunch, because our dinner is a prepaid group meal at Chef Mickey's. So, we feel lighter as we head off for the bus stop and on to MGM.
Several adults remain in camp this morning to pack up everything that has to be shipped home. Our large canopy, screen house, all the coolers, our flags, etc. will get shipped at 2:30 today. The golf cart gets picked up this morning too- we did really appreciate having that available this week. It did heavy duty between twice a day runs with the food coolers and several times in the week with laundry runs.
The scouts and several chaperones went to MGM for "Production Arts and Sciences" to learn all about film making and to help with their Cinematography Merit Badge (which, coincidentally was written by Steven Spielberg). We met our facilitator in front of the Mickey on top of the World flag pole near the entrance. She explained a little about what was to happen and then we entered the gates. Our last day- and everyone had their passes and they ALL worked
We walked down Hollywood Boulevard and about halfway down Sunset Blvd. and then stopped to talk about storyboarding. We learned the parts of a story and how they fit together. She gave us storyboards of Tower of Terror, and had us put them in the correct order and try to explain what was happening. Then we rode Tower of Terror, and were supposed to look for changes from those original storyboards. We all rode in the same car. My husband got the seatbelt seat and was SO happyThis was actually my first time on ToT in many years (I've been a chicken for quite some time)- but it was a blast and I'm so glad I rode.
Our instructor told us more interesting things about the ride after we were done. One thing I remember that impressed me was that the entire building is used for the attraction. There is no unused- or wasted- space. It looks so large for an "elevator" ride, but there are 4 cars- 2 on one level, the other 2 on another. They ride thru the building and the other spaces are used for the tons of machinery need to make it happen. You do actually drop 13 stories, and the ride is programmed to drop a different number of times each day. They will soon be able to make the random drops occur throughout the day- so that you could ride 4 times in a row and never have the same drop sequence
After TOT we went over to Echo Lake and made our own production of sortsThe scouts were to choose a director (they unanimously chose our oldest Eagle Scout!) and he chose a few helpers. My oldest was the casting director and he was given a "script"- he got to pick who would play what part! There were costumes and a story line. I think there were about 6 or 7 scenes and each one was to be "filmed" (on a digital still camera) by a different scout. The director and photographer set up the scene and made the "shoot." They had lots of fun in their costumes and roles. We would see the finished product later.
Next stop was the Great Movie Ride. We got the western theme and our tour guide did a great job. After that we went over to the shaded tables outside the ABC Commissary and learned about post-production marketing. How to advertise the film, merchandising, preview trailers, etc. Each group was given a different task to brainstorm ideas for marketing "our" production. They were getting a little bored by now, but they stuck with it and came up with a few good ideas.
Next she showed us New York Street and explained the forced perspective idea. She even let one or two of the scout go behind the police barricade and stand next to the buildings to emphasize how they really just "looked" like full size buildings! We walked down the street and looked back to see the full effect - it impressed them quite a bit!
Out last stop of the day was on a shady corner in the NY Street area where we received the 8x10 prints of "our production"- and she had them each take a print or two and line up in order again (like we did with ToT). This time they got to see their very own storyboard in action. We caught them explaining each step of the story on video- so we can look back on it.
This last program ended at about 11:30. Most everyone wanted to stay in MGM until it was time to go to Chef Mickey's. We split again into groups. My group ate lunch at the Commisary, my sons ate at Backlot Express. Most of us ended up in Millionaire at the same time- but no one got into the hot seatMy fingers just aren’t fast enough yet- at least I got all the questions right!
They rode RnRC at least 2 more times, some did the Backstage Tour and Catastrophe Canyon and Indiana Jones. We saw the Muppets, but I didn’t get to see Little Mermaid this time. We shopped and pin traded lots more and finally headed out to the buses at about 3:45.
Next- our final dinner at Chef Mickey's and a surprise!!

I'm sorry your trip is coming to an end - I've enjoyed your reports so much. Can't wait to hear what the surprise is!
