    Question Goofy

I thought I was pretty knowledgeable on things related to Disney, but a friend of mine (a Disney fanatic too) asked me a question I couldn't answer. Now I know that Pluto is Mickey's dog, BUT who and what is Goofy?

Goofy is a dog, who is Mickey's (and Donald's) friend, but he is not a pet like Pluto is. He was created and first appeared in a cartoon in 1932. He was originally called "Dippy Dawg".

I know, it is confusing. Goofy is a dog who is really a human, while Pluto is a dog who is really a dog.

Pluto is rather unique among the stars of the Disney short films in that he is the only one who is what he is. Pluto is a dog who acts like a dog. The other characters that had their own series (Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Oswald, Chip and Dale, etc.) were animals that acted like people.

While there are other Disney characters that act like animals (Figaro, Spike and Humphrey come to mind) I do not believe any of them had their own series of short films, they were always in supporting rolls, or were characters in feature films.

Figaro had some shorts where he was the star with his picture at the opening (although he only appeared in 6 shorts including these) :-)

I did not realize it was that many, I only thought it was only two. I did not expect a Figaro expert to come along and read my post.

I explain to my kids that Goofy is a goof and Pluto is a dog. No science to it, but it is a suitable answer for the kids.
