Default Hotel Pillow Trend? I sure hope not.

I'm posting this in the Misc. area because of my question at the end of this, so please bear with me.

So, my dh and I went to DL on a top secret diversion prior to going to our real vacation spot in Las Vegas. We normally just stay at the Holiday Inn Express near the park entrance. This trip we decided to stay at the Holiday Inn by the parking structure. When we were packing for the trip, my dh and I decided to bring our own pillows on this trip. We were going to be gone almost a week, we had the room in the car, and I'm a pillow snob. I love, love, love my temperpedic pillow and can't sleep all that well without it. We get to our hotel in Anaheim and get checked in and get to the room, and what do I find on our bed??? 5 small, 15 inch square pillows. No regular pillows. Huh????? I don't get it. 15 inch pillows! Who in the world only uses small square pillows to sleep with? Some of them were wrapped with ribbons that said "Soft" and "Firm", so I know they were intended to be used as bed pillows. Is this a new trend? I sure as heck hope not. Anyway, we were beyond thrilled with our pillows and got a great night sleep.

Oh no! I hope I don't need to add pillows to my packing list - soon I won't have any room for clothes in my suitcases!!

I've stayed in several hotels lately and have not seen this. In fact, the pillows at the Hershey Lodge and Hampton Inns are very comfortable!

I sure don't want to have to drag pillows along on a trip....

I totally expected to read the OPPOSITE after reading this thread title. I have found on our recent trips that the hotel pillows are HUGE and very dense. We've recently stayed at a Double Tree, a Sheraton, and a Kimpton hotel. Very interesting!

In the past year, I have stayed at an Omni, a Westin, a Best Western, a Holiday Inn, and a Loews. None of them had the small pillows you described. I did think that most of the pillows were a bit soft for my taste but after a long day of being at a conference or walking around DC, I didn't mind for long! Hopefully it was a hotel-specific thing.

I have a tough time already with the pillows at WDW. I have king sized pillows on my bed at home and the ones at WDW are either to thin or to thick, not just right.

I just hope they do not get any smaller because I might wake up from a dream and have eaten one thinking they were giant marshmellows..

I've had all kinds of pillows recently at hotels. There's no "industry standard" as far as that is concerned.

We actually like the smaller pillows at HI Express because they work well for our kids.

I ALWAYS bring my tempurpedic pillow when I travel. Otherwise, it's migraine city for me.

DH can sleep on a pile of rocks...literally. So, he doesn't care.

However, the past two hotels I've stayed at (Travelodge and a "fancy" hotel in Boston), we've had huge, puffy king sized pillows that were almost as big as me! Too big to sleep on...but good for sitting up in bed and propping behind my back.

Never leave home without my pillow. I actually like how little space it takes up in my suitcase since it squishes up to almost nothing.

I have noticed this on many of our recent trips to hotels. I have to bring my pillow from home now, because they are way too small and my neck kills me in the morning. My kids and DH have no problem with the smaller pillows in the rooms they usually use two each, but I have to have my firm king pillow and a smaller one to have by my side. I always bring pillow cases for every pillow in the room regardless if they are used or not. Since the pillows are mostly alternative down they are sinking their faces into them as im sure the last person did too, so pillow cases are a must...

Just this summer I stayed at Quality Inn and Best Western and both had the smaller pillows. I did not sleep well at either place. Like you I hope this trend does not continue.

Stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in FL in June - standard pillows there.
Hyatt Place - two different ones in the greater Raleigh area - choice of firm or soft standard sized pillows there - two of each -
Stayed at a HIEx in Western NC during DD's college Open House - Standard Pillows.
This was all in a 3 month period - and all had standard pillows.
I've never been anywhere with decorative pillows for the actual sleep pillows.

Sure hope this isn't becoming standard although I do travel with my temprapedic pillow because it works best with my cpap mask.

I have only found small pillows in one hotel. This was in New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. They were the most uncomfortable pillows I have ever had. We ended up buying a Hershey Bar body pillow at the Hershey store for my wife.

I guess the only way hotels will know these pillows are useless is to complain to the front desk AND complain the the chain. If they get enough complaints they will either ignore them or change back to regular pillows.

    I hope it's not a trend either....

Ironically, I went on a conference that was held on a college campus this summer, and packed a pillow and blanket, stating I was "too set in my ways" for whatever the dorm was handing out.

I was the envy of everyone around me. Pancake pillows and scratchy blankets...

We just stayed at a Holiday Inn 2 nights ago. The pillows APPEARED to be 15" squares, but when I grabbed one, undid the tucked in pillowcase, and shook the pillow, it expanded to "normal" pillow size. The pillow was old and lumpy...I assume they sort of ball it up into itself to make it appear fluffier. It's an illusion.
