Health & Wellness Suites at Contemporary Cancelled
Disney has cancelled plans for their Health & Wellness Suites at the Contemporary. Concierge Lounge on the 14th floor is still going to be refurbished, but that date has yet yo be decided.

Ok, that's weird. What is up with Disney publicly releasing plans and then canceling them? Same with the whole Hyperion Wharf thing. It's just bizarre. If they are going to do a public announcement, complete with concept art, they shouldn't back out later.
I mean, honestly, I thought these suites were a bit of a stretch, but still. It just makes them look bad that they keep doing this.

I agree, Nat - I can't imagine if my company announced something significant, and then rescinded the announcement a few months later. Makes the company look inept without a clear plan or leadership!

Not necessarily. Trial balloons to see if there was any interest. Sometimes they fly sometimes they pop.

I think they're cutting back to the core. They've taken a hit with Aulani, so I'm not surprised they canceled the National Harbor project. Maybe there hasn't been a great demand for specialty suites, so investing the capital in it may not make sense.

Probably a lot of truth in that. Being in the hotel business, it's a very difficult time. Not many expansions are going ahead because the consumer market just isn't there. The outlook isn't strong within the industry.
We also float trial balloons frequntly and we used to get many that floated and took off. Very few are getting much interest at the moment and surprisingly the upscale market doesn't show a lot of interest either.

I have to think that the economy is so unstable right now that even with millions spent on marketing studies, focus groups and even rumor-leaking, they can't be sure about the return on this kind of expense. Even with better-than-expected unemployment numbers that came out today, there has been very little financial good news.

We discuss all these cancellations on our soon to be released podcast. I agree it's a little alarming.
