Love bugs are typically around in May and September. Some years are worse than others.

We've already spotted a few in the Tampa area. They are making their way back!

We are in the St. Pete area, across the bay from Tampa and they are back with vengeance! It's a little early for them but they don't seem to care!

Aw, man. They were AWFUL when we were there in late September. We're going back on Sunday and I guess we'll run into them again. Shoot!

They're fairly heavy in the Orlando/WDW/Kissimmee area right now. But they can be super thick in one area, and a half mile down the road, you see none.

We just got back from WDW on 4/22 and they were out all over. I didn't know what they were until I asked. I was told they were love bugs.

I'm moving this over to Vacation Planning as it is not DVC specific.

They don't look like lady bugs and they don't bite. They simply fly around and are annoying - especially if you encounter a lot of them. The biggest nuisance factor is that they harm the paint on cars as their bodies are filled with an acidic like substance. May and September are their mating seasons so you will mostly see two bugs together whenever you see them. Most of the time (at least at Disney World) they are a very minor annoyance though there was a year a couple of years back that there was a very heavy infestation and they were everywhere!

How long do these stick around in May? We're going down in 3 weeks and I totally forgot about these darn things! I HATE them. I was there in September one year and they were awful...swarming around while I was waiting for buses. Ugh.

There were literally hundreds of them when we left Port Canaveral on the 15th! It was so disgusting we didn't want to get out of the car to get on the Dream. Several announcements were made to keep all verandah and outside doors closed until we were well away from the pier. After we were out at sea they disappeared and there were hardly any when we returned to Port Canaveral on the 19th.

We were at Universal May 14-17 and only saw a few. Driving back home we stopped at one of the Florida Rest Stops and saw several cars whose grills were just covered with Love Bug remains.
