    Default Spray Sun Screen

I am starting to get ready for our spring break trip.

Is is safe to take the spray sunscreen on the plane in the checked luggage? I would be putting it into a large zip lock bag. Just wondering if the pressure would make it explode.

I would perfer the spray on over the regular lotion type.
    Thanks

I have always put it in a Ziploc bag in my checked luggage. I have never had a problem with it.

That is what we do for our trips. I converted to spray on sun screen about a year ago and will never go back to lotion.

My Wife packs hairspray & mousse that has never exploded so spray on sunscreen will be fine.

If you'd like to know the physics behind it here ya go in a brief run down.
These types of cans are pressurized and therefore have a greater amount of pressure inside them than the outside. This helps keep them stable at high altitudes. Plus the plane itself is pressurized. If it wasn't our ears would definitely let us know it. Your more likely to have a bag of chips explode while driving through the mts. and hills of the northwest than you are to ever have a pressurized can explode on a plane. IHTH

With 4 girls in the family, we always have endless amounts of hair sprays, mouse and whenever traveling somewhere warm, sunscreen. We have never had any problems with these products exploding, leaking or anything of that nature. We have had more problems with shampoo or lotion spilling. Zip lock bags usually do the trick though.

I just took a can 2 weeks ago, in my checked luggage, and had no problems.

I was made to throw away a brand new can of spray sun screen at the airport. I was really ticked off. It was at our one stop between Missouri and Florida

    Sorry to hear that.

I suspect it was larger than the size allowed in carry-on by the TSA and was in your carry-on rather than checked luggage?

I encourage everyone to review the TSA regs before flying so they know what's acceptable and what is not and where to pack items that are acceptable for checked luggage but not for carry on.

Linda is spot on; the average-sized cans of spray sunscreen exceed the 3.4 ounce limit allowed in your carry-on bag. Those types of items should always be packed in your checked bags. And it's always wise to put items such as this inside a sealed ziplock bag. While there's very little chance of the spray cans "exploding" in the baggage hold, the airport conveyor belt system and the humans who handle your luggage are not known for their gentle handling methods.

Save yourself some aggravation at the security checkpoint by packing wisely. When in doubt, check it out at the TSA website.
