Default Pop Century - 1st timer needs help please!

We're begininng to plan a trip to WDW in Jan. 2011 and would like to stay at Pop to save money. What rooms are not preferred and close to kiddie pool, buses and dining? Also are there elevators? Oh, and also I am reading that there are refurbished rooms, what makes them different from others that have not been done yet? Also any other info would be helpful since we will be first timers at Pop!!! Thanks!

There are many pools throughout the resort, you just have to decide which you want to be close to. If you are talking about kids that cannot swim, there is Goofy's fountain which is entertaining. By the Hippy Dippy Pool is the real kiddie pool/fountain. Without a preferred room, you are not going to be able to be close to everything. The buildings right behind the lobby would probably be the best, but the tend to be louder with the main pool. All buildings have elevators, so that should not be an issue.

Look at a resort map and see for yourself the distances. The map is fairly accurate and you can see for yourself how far everything is away.

My experience with refurbishments in the values is new carpet, new headboards, new dressers, new paint, new borders and possibly new art. The bathroom may or may not have new tile. I've also noticed the sinks are becoming an all in one, solid surface. It's like a brand new room.

......I've also seen some pic's of recently refurbished rooms...and they added flat screen TV's. (didn't have opportunity to take a peek into the newly re-done room above us when we were just there 6 days ago)

....however...I'm not crazy about the removal of the "bureau" that the standard TV was set in. That piece of room furniture had a HUGE amount of storage space (I HATE living out of a suitcase if I'm at a hotel more than one day)

....guess I'll have to see if the newly appointed rooms get my "seal of approval" next time I'm there

....well...we were in 60's Bldg 4 (Rm 4111...1st floor)...and they were just going to start the
1st floor rooms right after we left last Sunday. I think that they worked thier way from upper to lower floors. So...I'm definitely sure that Bldg 4 will be completed in a few weeks. If you call the resort...I'm sure that they will let you know if the room you'll be in was recently re-done.

If you are not familiar with the Resort Maps on Intercot, choose the resort tab, go down to the bottom and choose POP Century, then all the way at the bottom there is a link for Map of the Property. There you can see the place of the buildings in conjunction with the food court, pools, etc., to choose which building you would prefer to be in.

How old are your children? We had a room in the 70s section near the water fountains that my 3 year old nephew loved when we went in 2005. When I go with my kids (teens), we love staying in the 50s section. There's a quiet pool there. It isn't too far from the lobby, and you can see fireworks from back side of one of the buildings.
I'll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.

We have a DD17 and DS4, both love to swim (hopefully we will get some warm afternoons). Also I have a bad knee, so we were trying to get as close to the main building as we can without paying for a preferred room. We are going with another couple and requested connecting rooms in the 60's building. Usually we stay in moderates, but decided to save a few hundred dollars this time! Thanks for any info you may have!

....the clothing isn't so much the issue with me....even though I do usually take a drawer to unpack into since the wife & daughter can "deal" with living out of the suitcases.

To me...the top of the bureau (above the TV) was a GREAT place to keep all the immediately accessable and essential items (like my bottle of bourbon!!)...and hats....sunscreen...glasses...and all the day-to-day "stuff" that is part of the vacation.

I believe the 60s are the preferred rooms. You may want to consider requesting rooms in the 50's section behind Lady.

When we stayed there, we stayed in the 80's Rubix Cube building. While on the map it looks far, it really is the closest to the buses. Our room was on the 2 or 3rd floor 2nd from the corner facing the back (not the parking lot). But, we were VERY surprised at how close we were to the buses and to the dining and pool.

We loved our location. BTW, I was also 6 months prego and we asked for a room closest to the buses when we checked in. They came through!

I'm reading this thread too, as we will be first timers at POP this January as well. I've been to all of the values, so this will be different for us. I've been looking at photos and reading reviews, so I hope it's as fun as everyone says!

"It's snowing still," said Eeyore gloomily.
    "So it is."
    "And freezing."
    "Is it?"
"Yes," said Eeyore. "However," he said, brightening up a little, "we haven't had an earthquake lately."

.....believe me...I'm sure you'll love it. I've pretty much decided that even if I had unlimited funds and could easily stay at one of the deluxe resorts....I'd still want to come back to POP.

    POP is fun.
Space saving tip I borrowed and use a lot:
Use the Closet hanging shoe/sweater boxes to give yourselves lot of sink area storage.

POP is fun. We stayed there for the first time in August. We will return. We paid a little extra to have a room close to the main building.
