Cinderella's Golden Carousel to have name change

Just read on the Disney Parks Blog a posting by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director for Disney Parks that effective June 1, 2010, Cinderella's Golden Carousel will be renamed Prince Charming Regal Carrousel.

Let me be the first to give this a thumbs down.

Agreed. Why did they have to do this? Reading the "reasoning" behind the name change from a Facebook link-I can say YUCK.

Is this in response to all the folks who think the MK is too "princess oriented" and think they need to "masculinize" things a bit to make it a little more boy friendly?

As if naming it after a "boy" will make it more "boy oriented." Now if they came up with an attraction called something like "Prince Charming's Regal Battle Stallions" that went twice as fast and involved slaying dragons, maybe....

I find it interesting how many people are complaining about this change. Personally, I don't see this as something to cause anxiety. Were they calling it the Marvel Coaster of Doom - yes, it would be a problem.

In my opinion, the name change is minor and in no way offensive. I also like the addition of this back story. Here’s the new "official" story:

"Following their fairy-tale romance and happily-ever-after wedding, Cinderella and Prince Charming took up residence in Cinderella’s Castle. With peace throughout the kingdom, Prince Charming had time to practice for jousting tournaments. In the countryside near the castle, he built a training device of carved horses, on which he could practice the art of ring-spearing, a tournament event in which a knight rides his horse full speed, lance in hand, toward a small ring hanging from a tree limb, with the object of spearing the ring. This event was known by various names throughout the lands, but generally came to be called “carrousel.”

The carrousel device drew the attention of the villagers, who wanted to take a turn on this amazing spinning contraption. So Prince Charming had a second carrousel constructed closer to the Castle, where everyone could take a spin on this wondrous invention. Instead of a working knight’s training device, however, this new carrousel is more befitting its regal location in the Castle Courtyard – its rustic training horses replaced with ornately decorated prancing steeds adorned with golden helmets and shields, flower garlands, feathers and other festoons. Prince Charming invites one and all to test their horsemanship skills and to enjoy their own happy ending."

I'm fine with the name change, especially with the story attached. I think it's great. Why not? It makes what is really an ordinary carousel ride a little more fun, perhaps. It's not an attraction so iconic to me that it couldn't stand a little tweaking. Though I understand others may not feel the same.

I still think its silly to change the name (and nothing else) after 39 years... You know, maybe if they gave kids lances and let them have a go at a ring like in the back story...Ok, that probably wouldn't work. Heck, just leave it alone if you can't improve it,

Really? Everyone is that annoyed by this?

I'll admit that it's kind of weird (why would Cinderella have a horse on Charming's lancing practice mechanism?) but it kind of makes sense seeing as Cinderella already has a castle and is getting a new meet and greet with the expansion.

I agree. This is silly to be annoyed over. As for why Cinderella has a horse, how about this: Prince Charming, showing his love, dedicates a horse to the princess. Sounds ok to me.

I found it a bit strange to rename it but I am not that fussed over the change. It's a lovely ride no matter what it is called

To me it just seems hokey. I'm not a huge fan of the notion that all these rides need to have a "story" now and the reverse engineering they've done on some attractions to manufacture these silly backstories.

It's a carousel. It doesn't need a story. Just let the little kids go round and round on it and don't overcomplicate things.

I've rode carousels with the rings before and it definetly brings a level of competition into the ride and makes you want to ride it again (never got the gold one. ) Of course, Disney would never do this for fear of someone getting their finger caught or falling off reaching for it.

And they certainly wouldn't give kids lances...but its fun to think about!
