In desperate need of serious pixie dust
My friend's daughter and her friend were in an accident on Saturday night. Both girls were riding a single bike together when they lost control and crashed head-on into a tree. They are currently in critical condition. My friend's daughter has severe head injuries and had a stroke this morning. She's in a drug-induced coma, extremely battered and swollen, has a broken femur, and potentially other broken bones including possibly a hip or pelvis but it's too risky to attempt further x-rays right now. She may not survive - the doctors say her age is in her favor but she's still in a very bad state. Her friend has broken both legs, has had a foot amputated, her shoulder is shattered, she has lacerations on several internal organs, and bruised lungs. She is on a ventilator right now. Both girls are only 14.

Sending many prayers and lots of pixie dust their way. What a sad thing to happen to such young girls. Hopefully things will turn around for them. I had a relative who was in a serious car accident with similar injury's and they were put into an induced coma also. Low and behold they brought him out of the coma a week later and beside the broken bones he was in perfect health (head wise) and was back to work in about 2 months. I am sending my best wishes for a speedy recovery to them and their families.

Oh my God. My heart and prayers go out to the families.
I am asking this for informational purposes and not to belittle what has happened. I am asking to protect my 4 year old daughter. I am thinking about hiding her bike for the season now.
Were they riding a bicycle or motorized bike?
Were they wearing helmets?
How did this occur?
From the damages, it is hard to fathom how peddling a bicycle could cause such massive damages (head trauma can be understood, a broken leg understood, two broken legs ca little much, an amputation is a little out there. All of this together is unimaginable. It almost sounds like the absolute worst case scenarion)

The girls were riding together on a single, regular bicycle on a fairly steep rural road. They lost control of the bike and went 30 feet over another hill and head-first into a tree. Unfortunately, they were not wearing helmets although I'm not sure how much of the head trauma that would have prevented. Because it was a rural road, the only reason they were found when they were was because another cyclist happened to hear one of them thrashing and moaning as he passed by the spot of the accident - he normally does not take that particular route. It was getting late in the day and they would have been difficult to spot from a car, especially in the dark.
