Soarin' - Hey Wait, That's Us!

I had an unusual experience sitting next to my son on Soarin'.

During the scene where you follow a helicopter as it flies over the deck of the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis (CVN 74), my son anxiously pointed to the right rear of the flight deck and said, "Look! That's us! See the F-14s with checkerboard marking on the tail!? VF-211! I was on that cruise with that group!

We had to see Soarin' again. It was a big thrill.

Wish they filmed the scene on a real carrier approach..rather than overflying from the bow to the stern (front to rear). But Soaring and the launch of RnRC trigger memories of carrier days in the Gulf of Tonkin....Made over 125 carrier landings in the back end of the EA-3B...never saw the deck until the trap....Just hung on and prayed....I could do almost a complete rosary from the time the pilot called the ball until the EA-3B caught the wire, and came to a complete stop.

I was amazed back then, and remain amazed, of the hundreds of diverse men (and today, women), who flow across the decks during carrier operations...that each knows what to do, each is depended on by so many others, and each performs, hours and hours on end, in incredible, carefully orchestrated apparent chaos....My classmate, Charlie Plumb, talks of such people in his speeches..."Who Packs Your Parachute" You learn to appreciate (and accept) people when you realize that your life depends on them...and theirs on you.

My Mom gets all gushy at that point, too, because she supported the F-14's from about 1984 all the way through their decommissioning in 2006. She spent a lot of time out in Miramar and everything and, even though she's moved on to supporting the Maritime Reconnaisance Aircraft (P-3/S-3) she still considers the F-14 "her" plane.

Pretty cool, though ... your son was probably on that boat at the exact time they filmed that sequence!

For a native Kansan, Charlie is surprisingly articulate. He was always a positive person. While a POW, Charlie was named the Chaplain by the other POW's...He still tours and speaks, and his messages are always well received.
