Space Mountain Refurb???
I heard a rumor yesterday (via DIS Unplugged) that Space Mountain will go down in January for a YEAR AND A HALF for a refurb that'll make it just like DL's. Before posts go up of "Oh, no! SM's down for a year and a half!", I have done both DL and WDW's SM. Think of DL's SM as WDW's but on whatever Barry Bonds took with music, better lighting, etc. As much as I have a place in my heart for WDW's SM, it's a long time coming for the next gen SM.

That same rumor floated around last year that it was Jan 08 to close for refurb. I really hope so, it is really needed.

I hope they don't decide to do this. It is the most iconic attraction by far of all in WDW, and even being a 31 year old attraction, it still packs plenty of guests in. How many times have you walked by the entrance and seen the line extending all the way to TTA?! it has the classic feel to it every time I go that reminds me of being there when I was young. Losing the fed ex sponser and exit speil on the ramp was bad enough, its kinda of just like blah now. If anything, the Matterhorn should be added in a diffrent location in MK instead of closing something that still draws the crowds, and is a true classic. though after all it is just a rumor so :X

I like the way SM is right now, I don't have a problem with it. It's my favorite ride. Hope they don't change it.

I would like to see SM updated, it is so jerky that it hurts my body to ride it.

We rode the one in Disneyland several times in June and it was Awesome!! THey didn't destroy the original flavor at all, they just really helped it out a bit with the music and better effects. The music cracks me up - it is like cheesy Get Smart music but it really works well with it.
I really hope they do refurbish the one in WDW - it really needs it. Now that we have ridden the one at DL, we are unimpressed by the one in WDW and have skipped it in anticipation of the renovated version...

That would be awesome! DL upgrade is the same track setup just a better and smoother track and with speakers that work.
DW space mountin scares me just because it is so rough.

On my last trip to WDW I skipped riding Space Mountain a second time, because it was just way too rough compared to the refurbished one at Disneyland. I look forward to seeing the ride updated.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the DL version of SM is way too vanilla to me, it's so smooth it's boring. If you're so excited about music, bring an iPod to Disney.
DL still has the Matterhorn with the old SM cars on it and that ride is always crowded. You think SM at DW is rough??? Try the Matterhorn, it will shake your teeth loose, but you'll still be laughing all the way through the ride, because it's an alltime classic, just like SM at DW!! The ride definitely needs to be refurbed somewhat, but please don't make it a lounge chair with headphones like at DL!! Keep the classic feel, it's an icon, don't break it!!

While I disagree about SM, I'm in total agreement about the matterhorn, it absolutely beat us to death, but we thought is was a blast to ride (especially at night). I suppose I wouldn't be so quick to want a SM refurb if I thought that they might add a true coaster to the MK...but since that doesn't seem all that likely, a new and improved SM is (IMHO) the next best option.
There's a great big beautiful tomorrow

I agree 100%! I was content with WDW SM for a long time... until I rode SM at DL. Amazingly better. (and for reference, I pretty much liked everything else better at WDW, so this is a big statement)

I agree 100%! OMG - the only other ride I ever rode that was this rough was the Gemini at Cedar Point (I think that is the wooden coaster I remember). After having experienced EE at Animal Kingdom, I was unimpressed with the Matterhorn. I know they aren't the same ride, but had me comparing anyhow...

I hope they do completely refurb Space Mountain. In it's day it was a cool coaster, but with Everest and Rock-n-Roller Coaster, it's day has obviously passed. I know it's popular, but it can be much better.
Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you!

I agree, when I was at Space we were always last to know about anything. That being said, it does need a refurb. Its old and has its quirks, and really isn't that efficient to run, takes alot of manpower
