Are you planning booking your airfare through Disney? If you are, and want to fly in a day early, they will most likely book you at the MCO Hyatt (hotel in the Orlando Airport). If you purchase the transfers from the airport, they have organized it where they offer some buses that are only for hotel guests, and they also take care of your luggage, picking it up from you room.
What we usually do is book our airfare ourselves (we can shop around and pick our times), and stay at the MCO Hyatt to take advantage of the luggage and bus transfers. We could do it differently, but this is very convienient and enjoy staying at this hotel. When we check in, we tell the desk we are sailing with Disney, and they give us a sheet of instructions about luggage and how the morning's schedule runs.
We like arriving the day before, because who knows what can happen if you fly in the day of!!

If you're going to fly in the day before, definitely shop around for air fares before you book it through DCL. You can probably find cheaper and get the time/flight that you want. You're more limited when you book through them.
The MCO Hyatt is very convenient if you're arriving late. I've also heard of guests who will go over to a value resort just for the night and hang around at DTD (sort of getting into the Disney vibe right away). Magical Express can get you to Disney World and you can book a transfer the next day from a select group of resorts.
Lots of options, you can certainly pick what's best for you.
