As others have alluded to, weight distribution is key to not getting wet from the big drop. Heavy peeps in the back = glide over water at the bottom of Falls. Heavy peeps in the front = front of boat digs into water = tidal wave = SOAKED!!!!

It's not just Splash Mtn at WDW. We got SOAKED on Splash at DL in Nov. Wetter than any ride on KRR or DCA's Grizzly River Rapids.

One thing I noticed that time was that they had the pumps really pushing the water through the ride. It was way too fast - our log was hitting the walls hard and there wasn't time to enjoy the ride at all. I wonder if the water speed affects the way the water reacts at the bottom of the big drop...?

Also, it wasn't the first impact with the water that was the problem. We were drenched by a secondary wave that splashed over the side of the log a few seconds after we hit the bottom and slowed way down. The wave then caught up to us and nailed us big time!

    Default Our theory

On our last two trips to WDW, my son and I spent a lot of time watching the drop area of Splash Mountain while my wife and my daughter rode Thunder Mountain multiple times.

We started out by trying to guess which cars were going to get soaked, jokingly saying to each other stuff such as "look at the big guys in the front of that car, they're going to get WET!", etc. We tried to see if we could predict the soaking based on the amount of people in the car, and where they were sitting.

While doing this, we noticed that once in a while a completely empty car would generate a huge splash. This didn't mesh with any of our theories.

So we started counting the cars.

We found that every third car gets soaked, no mater the load or the position of the riders.

After we figured it out, we confirmed it many many times.

They have added 2" of H2O. Americans are
almost 20 lbs. heavyer than they were when
SM was designed (1988). Then you got the
biggins almost 7 times more people over 300
    lbs. since then.

Got very wet Dec. 11 told my wife this is the
result of to many buffets and dining plans..

We were blasted by the water cannons after the first drop. I found that if you have bigger people up front, you get more of a splash.

    Default splash rate

How then does that explain that every third car gets splashed, even if empty? Stand there for an hour or so and watch and count the cars and you'll see that I am correct!

We rode it last week. My DH & DD got really wet on their right sides. I was in the log behind them and didn't get too wet - oh yeah - I had on a poncho! I love this ride, but don't like to walk around wet so I buy little, disposable ponchos (less than a $1.00 at Wal-mart). I saw some people who were soaked and other who were barely wet at all - even without ponchos.

We were there early September and got drenched every time we rode it on the way UP! The first time we weren't even expecting it and didn't protect bags/camera's. I know, I know...it's a ride that you get wet on but for all the many years we've gone we have never, ever gotten THAT wet! In fact, until this last trip I do not remember getting wet at all when going up, just on the way down and at some of the little down ramps.

    Default a possibility?

As a side thought, I have noticed that if it rains heavily during the day you tend to get much wetter. Common sense it seems but I actually noticed that if it rains heavy for over an hour the night before, the following day you get soaked no matter where you sit in the log.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. There is definitely something going on with the water level. I think I'm just going to have to take another trip down there just to do some "research". Sounds like a good reason, right?

Are you certain that ONE more research visit would be statistically valid for a conclusion?

I think at least 9 more visits would an appropriate number to get an accurate statistical analysis. Now, if I could just convince the wife that this hypothesis "needs" to be tested for the good of the science community. Sounds plausible, right?

I think the Soak-ification is very random. Sometimes you get soaked, and sometimes you don't.

Just got back from the mouse and did not get wet at all on SM, but the two rows in front of me got drenched! For this ride and past rides on SM, the drenching came from the water cannons and not the drop. After watching, it seems all random as to which car gets hit. The driest part is in the left rear and the wettest is always going to be the right side and usually the front two rows.

Wow, this is really funny. I totally forgot about it until reading this thread but I got absolutely soaked the last time I rode.

Now, I sat in the front for the first time (the front right, as a matter of fact) and I'm not exactly the smallest guy in the world. I was also with someone who insisted that she gets soaked on rides all the time, so I just chalked it up to "the curse." I had no idea this was a recuring trend.

    Very funny.

BTW, kudos to the guy who attributed this phenomenon to the dining plan.

We were there over Thanksgiving and got soaked even in the back row. I didnt notice the water level was any higher, but I dont pay that close attention to it. We were soaked going up the first hill by the water cannon that goes off as other boats come down. The cannon has always been there, but I remember it being timed so it for the most part missed the boats going up and was more there to scare you than to get you wet. Guess they re-thought the timing.

    Default Ouch!

So, nobody is going to verify my every-third-car-gets-splashed observation? It's really true! Do I have to go back down and film it for statistical validation? How many nines will you accept? Even empty cars get it, if they're the third car in the sequence. It's not payload dependent.
