    Default Atlantic City or Poconos

DW and I want to spend a night somewhere for our Anniversary. We live a few hours from Atlantic City and about one hour from the Pocono Mountains. We haven't been to AC in over 10 years and have never been to the Poconos. I am open to any suggestions in the area.

    Also, any good hotel/resort suggestions?

    Thanks

Well, my personal preference would be the Poconos , but it doesn't matter what my preference is. do you prefer beautiful mountains or casinos? Also, I would think it matters when you're going. Peak fall leaf season will be coming soon and the Poconos can get pretty crowded during that time.

In terms of resorts - Cove Haven and Paradise Stream are very romantic. Carriage House is very nice. Great Wolf Lodge is a blast, but I think it's more family oriented. Brookdale-on-the-Lake has a lot of great stuff for couples.

We're not big on casinos, but we did enjoy Las Vegas about 9 years ago. The date I wanted to go was October 27-28. I don't know what the leaves are doing at time?

I'd pick poconos as well. We went back East for a vist about 5 years ago and actually did both. We stayed at Slip Rock? something like that, and it was okay (family spot). We went to Bushkill Falls too - really neat place. Nascar was there too, so we got to see the race and just so happens our fav driver won. Loved it up there. We were really disappointed with AC. It seemed so dirty, sketchy area etc. since I'd been there as a kid. I love the Jersey Shore, but not AC.
    Enjoy your anniversary!

    Holy Cow,
I just realized you're from Easton - I was born there. My grandfather still lives in P'burg and my Mom is going back for her 40 something class reunion at P'burg high.

Peak leaf season for that area is usually past by then. I think the bigger crowds tend to be mid-September through mid-October so you shouldn't encounter huge crowds around late October.

The Poconos seem to be the more romantically geared of the two. It all depends, though, on how you enjoy spending a weekend.

Poconos: Quiet, relaxing, quaint towns and shopping, laid-back couples-geared resorts.

Atlantic City: Faster paced, casinos, big name entertainment, bars, high-end shopping, boardwalk attractions.

Personally, I'd pick Atlantic City, but that's just because I like to do stuff when I'm gone away. My parents, though, would pick the Poconos no questions asked. They like to sip coffee by a fire or lay by the pool all day.

It all comes down to what you like the best.

    Default Poconos for me

I would pick the poconos. There is so much to see and do. We love hiking in the woods and just exporing nature. Bushkill Falls is beautiful. Very easy to walk around and see all the waterfalls. The Delaware Water Gap is just as nice. Tannersville has a great outlet center. There are a ton of bed and breakfast places that I would pick over a hotel. Much more romantic. Atlantic City is not my favorite place. I find it to be really dirty and crowded. I know that they just put in new shops, but if you are walking from one casino to another on the boardwalk, you want to be careful. Especially at night. We went a few years ago for my husbands holiday party. A car hit us while we were standing in traffic, then tried to flee. My husband tracked down the police and they actually wound up chasing the guy. Turned out he was drunk. It was still light outside. That has turned me off. I know drunk driving happens at all hours of the day, but give me a peaceful spot to go to and relax.

DW and I have done both.
In AC we had a nice dinner, saw a show, and strolled on the Boardwalk. We also did a little gambling.

In the poconos we went horseback riding, went to the outlets and some other local shopping areas and spent time relaxing at the resort. (meals and other activities)

All things being equal, I liked the poconos better.

I agree with going with the pocono cesear resorts. DH and I love going to Pocono Palace. It is just like a cruise but on land. Dinner is all you can eat and they offer alot of clean adult activites you can do during the day and more R rated (Not X) adult things to do at night. If you win at the activites they even give you a medal and a bottle of champage for winning. Definatley try staying in the Garden Eden Apple room at Pocono Palace.

I had to rewrite my post since I found out when you are going. I was GOING to say go to Atlantic City but I changed my answer, head to the Poconos. The leaves this time of year are breathtaking. I would find a cute hotel or even a bed and breakfast. There is alot of shopping to do. My suggestion, drive up and down Rt 209, there are candle factories, a cheesecake factory and such. Even on Rt 80, there is a winery. Check out 800poconos.com.

This must be a popular area because I was born in P'Burg and live in Easton now.

You could try Mt. Airy Lodge. They will be opening this Fall with a casino! That is located in Mt. Pocono. We live in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains (near Jim Thorpe). Jim Thorpe is also a nice town to visit. It has a lot of historic homes, shopping, and a scenic train ride. Wherever you chose, I hope you have a nice time!

P'Burg!! I live in Easton but went to P'Burg High. What's worse, I used to live right around the corner from where they played the game.

Think you meant Split Rock Lodge, rather than Slippery Rock....Slippery Rock isn't near the Poconos. My siblings and I did a surprise party for our Dad for his 80th at Split Rck Lodge....back in '92....Since it was August, we were able to get about 20 rooms, plus one of the cottages...His 5 children, our 5 spouses, most of 20 grandkids (and some spouses), and most of his (then) 20 great grand kids were able to make it....had a great weekend....The lodge was able to host about 76 of us for a private dinner. (Well, as private as it can be with 76 people). Lovely area, close to I-80 and the NE Extension of the TP....facilities for swimming, tennis, golf, hiking, bicycling, and more...

Since we are playing "small world"....wife and I are both from LV area...wife worked at Easton Hospital before we married....I grew up between Saylorsburg and Brodheadsville....Joined the Navy, saw the world....DD#1 was born in Easton while I was in Southeast Asia....DS#1 was born in FL, lived in GA, Japan, CA, HI, MD and VA before going to college where he met DDiL#1, who was born in Easton!

Seems to be a lot of Disney fans in the area.

Come on Disney - buy Bushkill Park and make it into a miniature Disneyland (just kidding, that would never happen).

Call first before you plan anything. We spoke with someone who will work in the casino and while the casino itself will open in the fall, they don't expect the resort to open now until January 08. It was originally supposed to open at the same time as the casino.

Oh and don't let the word "casino" scare you. It's actually just slots, no tables at this one. I live about 5 minutes from it and there is a TON of construction going on there now. I personally don't see how they will be ready to open anything by January but construction crews can surprise you.

Depending on what time you come, the weather can be very sketchy. For instance, we've had snow as early as late October before. Last winter, it didn't snow until Feb 07. Really unpredictible so bring clothes for all types of weather .

If you like water parks the Great Wolf Lodge is a great place to go in the Poconos. You can't beat the fun, the place has good food also. This place will keep you busy all day.

Atlantic City has changed alot in 10 years and I think you will be pleasantly surprised at all the fun new stuff, great shows and all of the food choices. It has really gotten alot better.

We are the opposite from you 45 mins from AC and two hours from the Poconos.

I agree with NJGIRL--Atlantic City has definitely improved over the past few years. I honestly used to hate it and rarely visited. But my mother-in-law recently became a high roller at The Borgata. Because of that she of course gets a ton of comps, which includes free rooms, so she's always inviting us down for the weekend. The Borgata is an awesome resort! The dining is great, and my DS1 loves their pool. We've also ventured out to the outlets--great variety of stores, and then they've cleaned up the Boardwalk. Lots of good shopping and restaurants there, too.

Definitely give it a try if you're not sold on the Poconos yet!
