The
soaring lobby of the Grand Californian welcomes guests with dark woods, an
intricate floral patterned floor, and Tiffany lamps. The architecture and
design were inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th
century. The theme is decidedly "nature" with an emphasis on the woods.
Large carved wooden supports mimic the trunks of a tree as they soar 5
stories tall and smaller supports branch off, to represent tree branches. A
huge stone fireplace sits off the side of the lobby, inviting guests to
relax in large wooden rocking chairs. A grand piano sits in the center of
the room, surrounded by plush armchairs and couches. Delightfully cool in
the summer, and cozy in the winter, the lobby is a highlight of the resort
and a comfortable gathering place for guests.
