Large Expansion Announced for Disney's Coronado Springs Resort
Today, the Walt Disney World resort has announced a large expansion project for Disney's Coronado Springs Resort including the following:
- A new 15-story tower that will add 500 rooms, featuring suites and concierge level services.
- Rooftop dining with panoramic views of popular nighttime fireworks.
- Refurbishment of current resort rooms.
- Transform of the resort landscape with floating gardens and an island oasis that connects the resort through a series of bridges.
The following is the first concept art of the new tower that will overlook Lago Dorado:

Wow, never saw that coming. Why would they put the tower there instead of CBR? I think it really takes away from the look of the property if they put it right along the water side of the main building like that. Hopefully the rooms look better than the last refurb which were a little dull I thought.

My first reaction is I'm not a fan of the tower. Although it's a alerady a large resort, it never feels crowded to me. An additional 500 rooms is a lot to add. I think a tower also totally adds a different feel to the resort and I don't care for how it looks in the concept art.
Resortwise I think it does make sense to add suites and concierge service to. CSR has always been more of an upscale moderate since it has the conference center, the salon, gym and other extras.

Convention business... DVC is going to Caribbean Beach... at least that is the talk/thought...

TRICIA JONES: I heard that you were going to propose to Brandi Svenning at some theme park. When are men going to learn that women want ROMANCE, not Mr. Toad's Wild Ride...
BRODIE: Hey, now, be fair. EVERYONE wants Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

Yeah, not excited. It can be chaotic enough, and I like CS.
Build a new resort! If you build it, they will come... Unless its horrible. Eh, people will still go. Its Disney.

Not happy about this new tower at all. CSR is my fave, especially for the beautiful grounds and laid back feel of the resort. This will totally change the resort and they will probably end up raising the prices too making it a deluxe instead of a moderate. How about they build more moderates for those of us who don't want to pay the deluxe price yet do not want to stay in the values. Why do they feel the need to build a tower for all the resorts now? It just ruins the quaintness of them. Sure a rooftop restaurant is nice, but I can go to Cali grill for that. So bummed they are ruining CSR.

Yeah, I guess this more for the business folks needs (as I've been from time to time) where a more traditional hotel experience is acceptable, or even preferred.

My guess is that this tower will be for the exclusive use of convention goers, with leftover rooms being offered to the general public. It will probably be hard to get a room here if you aren't part of a convention.

But on non convention weeks, they'll rent that out for reduced rates i'm sure. Or smaller conventions they'll have space (that hall isn't that big).

Reduced rates? More like much higher rates! They give serious discounts to convention/conference attendees.

If they're building the tower for conventions they'll probably have new space in it. I wouldn't count on them reducing the rates too much, probably in line with the Swan and Dolphin whose rates are on the upswing.
Speaking of, question for those with a better memory than mine - didn't they off load the Swan and Dolphin because they wanted to get out of the convention business? Now they're enlarging the YC space and adding this?

Disney never owned or operated Swan and Dolphin. It was always a third party operation. It was constructed as a way for Disney to make some easy money on a land lease deal, basically.

Sorry yeah. Must have been the scotch talking when I said reduced. But yeah, they'll sell those out to whomever. Course, who knows. Maybe it'll be okay. I'm not a huge fan of change, especially to any of my preferred resorts. When I've been there on business, I liked being far away from the action. Though most of my conferences have been at the Orlando Conference center.
I wonder if they will increase the cc size.
