Tipping-appropriate??

How much is appropriate for a deluxe resort? Do you usualyy get the 'little extras' when you tip?

I'm assuming that you mean tipping Mousekeeping. I do tip about $2-$3 a day because I think they do a great job of keeping the rooms clean and I KNOW it's a tough job. Tipping, however, is NEVER required and I have gotten the same service without tipping. If I find that service is not as good as I would like it, I might not tip or if it's really good, I increase the tip. How much really depends on how many people are staying in the room and how much of a mess there is!

I agree with Beth. Regardless of a tip, deluxe housekeepers do an EXCELLENT job. I have found on the last few trips that I reserve the tip for the last day. Because when I leave it out, the housekeepers don't usually take it. So, I usually tip $2 per day and leave it all at once at the end with a note thanking my housekeeper. At least once I run into my housekeeper in person and find out if they will be on the day of our checkout, so they aren't getting the shaft.

Valets, Bell services, and housekeeping are all there to make a living and provide a service. I look at it like service from a good waiter/waitress.

That being said, I noticed something odd. When we stayed at AKL, and received the little resort guide (I think it was called Harambe), it had a little section on tipping, and I was suprised to find the housekeepers omitted.

That's because you're not "supposed" to tip mousekeeping. Or feel obligated. But personally, I feel that it is something that good service deserves.

Now you're making me feel bad. I've never tipped the Mousekeepers. I guess I never thought about it before. I always tip the car valets and the bell hops. Where do you leave the tips for the Mousekeepers so they don't think the $$ is yours? Do you leave a note?

Using a GREAT idea of fellow mod, Imalismom, I make "tipping envelopes" before I leave home. So every day there is an envelope with $ in it specifically marked for housekeeping. It also helps because you can make up these envelopes months in advance, a little at a time, so you don't feel the "tipping crunch"

Thanks for the helpful hints and comments. I have only stayed on disney property once several years ago (CB) and did not think about tipping. We did not get any of the "little extras" I have been reading about.

When we were at DXL in February, our Mousekeeper made our room such a joy to return to! She would take all my son's buddies and arrange them in a scene-one day they were having snacks, watching TV (Disney Channel, natch), another day they were reading a book, one day she made an elephant out of towels, another day it was a monkey! People who have cruised have told me it was standard for their housekeepers to do this but this was the first time this happened to us at WDW!

Hats off to Nellie, our wonderful Mousekeeper! I even took pictures and made a special page for her in our book!

Anyway, needless to say, we gave her a BIGGGG tip when we left--it was worth it to have all the extra towels, shampoos, soaps, and have everything in our oh-so-crowded room neatly arranged!!!

I always leave mousekeeping's tip in the sink. That way they know the money is intended for them. I don't remember where I learned this, but I think it's universally understood by housekeeping. Go figure?!?!

Of course, the envelopes are a great idea...but if you forget to pack them, just leave your tip in the sink.

I have already made up envelopes for mousekeeping. We usually put in $3.00 per day. We leave one out each day and have never had problems with the maid not taking it because the envelopes are addressed to them. I leave one a day instead of waiting till we leave because I want the person doing the work that day to get the tip, you might not get the same person each day since no one works 7 days a week. Since I already have the money in the envelopes, I avoid the hastle oflooking for singles in the morning before we leave the room. I also have a stash of singles saved to hand out to the bell men so I don't have to worry about finding them at the last minute. One less worry.

During our stay at Wilderness Lodge, there was a little card with our maid's name on it stuck in the frame of the mirror. We just placed our tip in the frame with the card each day.

Good tip, Brian. (No pun intended...really!) In addition to that card at the Grand Floridian, there is also a card for the turn-down service. When we were leaving after our two-night stay, all I had on me was a $10 bill and didn't have time to go make change. I felt horrible I couldn't leave the turn-down people a tip, because they made it a joy to come into our room at night after a long day at the parks.

I love tipping, especially personally. I enjoy seeing their faces because they know I appreciate what they did for me. That's just me, though. I also tend to over-tip!

BTW, on the cruise, they GIVE you envelopes and let you know what the recommended tip is for each person (head waiter, server, assistant server, and hostess.)
