I would venture to guess that this new deal with TCM and the GMR was part of the reason for the removal of the hat.
Yeah, your sponsored ride with all the TCM logos is tucked back there, behind that blue pointy hat.... I don't think so.

Unfortunate
Such a rinky-dink refurbs. So they update the film showing in the 'theater' part of the queue and the finale.
By not changing any interior scenes are they saying nothing classic has happened since the attraction opened? Wasn't Alien a bad fit from day one?
It just seems like someone said, "We're taking down the Sorcerer's Hay so the theater will be very visible and what's the cheapest fastest was we can give the impression we've updated this attraction?
Instead of making the wait to ride Peter Pan's flight shorted they decorated and lengthened the queue (and closed a regular restroom pitstop). What's wrong with these pictures?

While you may think this refurb is minor, I see it as a step in the right direction of refreshing rides and reviving the use of corporate sponsors, which has been how Disney has funded rides since the opening of Disneyland. Whose to say that after some of the new rumored changes for DHS have happened that they then close GMR for a longer period of time for a more extensive rehab?
With the opening of the bathrooms on the site of the old skyway station, you could afford to lose the bathrooms by Peter Pan and help to make the queue for Peter Pan, which is always at least 30 minutes long, more entertaining.

Exactly christine.
They can't afford to close down the attraction right now. HS needs its. Once the rumored expansion is complete, then it can be taken down.
Similar issue with Expedition Everest. The Yeti needs to be fixed, but they can't afford to close the attraction. Maybe once Pandora is open it can be shut down.

Or possibly TCM said "why would we want to sponsor an attraction that is hidden behind the Sorcerer's hat so guests can't see ?" The powers that be put their heads together and said "Hey! Why don't we remove the Sorcerer's hat to help the guests see the attraction that we want TCM to sponsor?"

In DHS, Great Movie Ride is the least of their worries, and at the bottom of their priorities... Once everything else is completed, however....
Son of Jor-El.. Kneel before Zod...
TRICIA JONES: I heard that you were going to propose to Brandi Svenning at some theme park. When are men going to learn that women want ROMANCE, not Mr. Toad's Wild Ride...
BRODIE: Hey, now, be fair. EVERYONE wants Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

I think we agree that is most likely their plan. They need to keep some rides running and GMR is a large capacity ride.
