What happens if I do not book fastpass ahead of time? Is there still a possibility of getting any FPs once I get there? Or do we have to use standby for everything?

2- At THIS time, no.

We arrived on the 3rd Jan and picked up our AP that day. I was able to reserve my Fast Passes for the next day and for everyday after for 3 days so far. I was also surprised to be able to pick up the premium type of attractions like Soaring, Peter Pan and Toy Story. Rides that were difficult for us to get before FP+

Very few guests can participate in advance FP+ yet,
so the numbers are not under significant strain.

More than half of the guests at WDW are NOT staying at on-site resorts.

At this time (and up to this time,) only guests who ARE staying on-site (or AP guests who did stay on-site at least once recently) can make advanced FP+ reservations.
