Default Aulani lagoon closed due to sewer pipe break

Raw sewage spill closes lagoons at Ko Olina

    KAPOLEI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Thousands of people looking for a day at the beach at Ko Olina will be told to stay out of the water on Friday after more than 1,000 gallons of wastewater discharge entered the ocean near Paradise Cove.

According to the state Department of Health, the spill occurred after a sewage pipe broke near Ali'i Nui Drive. The DOH says that sampling of water will begin at first light, and signs will be posted warning beachgoers to stay out of the water between Paradise Cove and Honu Lagoon 2.

The city's Department of Environmental Services says the break in a 16-inch main occurred just after 9 p.m. and wasn't stopped until nearly 11:30 p.m.

Lagoon 1, which the Ihilani and Aulani resorts sit on, is included in the stretch of closed beaches.

Because of the road repairs, residents are being told to exit the resort through a back gate that will be open to traffic while work is being conducted.

We will have more information on this developing story as soon as it becomes available.

How disappointing for the vacationers there during this. I'm sure Disney is working hard to try to make up for it, but some things can't be helped or recovered sufficiently.

That's too bad. Hopefully some of the guests have a car and can go elsewhere to enjoy while they clean up. The JW Marriott and Marriott Vacation Villas are on the same lagoon. Paradise Cove is just beyond that. Sounds like this is out of Disney's control.

That doesn't seem very fair when it was a public sewage pipe that broke that wasn't even on Disney's property.

Agree. This wasn't in Disney's control at all.
