Extra day at DLR - what to do?

We have a day without tickets to the parks at DLR. I can't really plan for sure to swim because of the time of year we're going, and our hotel pool isn't that great anyway - so looking for other ideas. I know there is always downtown disney. Wondering what thoughts are about Legoland, Universal, and other Southern California attractions? My kids are 10 and 5 - not really into legos in general, but enjoy theme parks/rides in general, so I thought about going to Legoland. Just wanted to get some opinions on the choices I've thought of and am open to other suggestions as well. Thanks in advance!
