We will be in the Disneyland area in August and have managed to free up 1 day to visit Disneyland. Can anyone tell me if this do-able?

As long as you go with the knowledge that you will not be able to see and do everything. August will very likely be hot and crowded. But both parks should have decent hours and if you have a reasonable plan of attack you could make it a good experience.

Looks like you're a veteran of the WDW property, so handling DLR (at least the Magic Kingdom park) in one day will seem like a piece of cake. My 1st trip to DLR, I skipped rides that were identical to WDW, or very very similar. If you do that, you won't even need a full day. Also, crowds at DLR seem to arrive relatively later in the day than WDW. So, if you get that at park opening, it should be extra do-able.
Compared to WDW, DLR is small and quaint (but totally worth it to experience even more of Walt's vision.)
