Default 5K Run at Castaway Cay?

I thought I saw something on a Navigator about a morning 5K on Castaway Cay. Is it just a workout with like-minded people, or is it an actual timed fun run with a T-shirt, "medal," etc. or some other kind of commemorative goodie? What's the route like?

Oh my, hasn't anyone done this? No runners out there? Hmmmm... that would make it a private training session with a cast member?

I haven't done it - - 5K would take me about two weeks - - but on our recent cruise I did hear it announced and saw the start area, which is near the Pelican Plunge part of the family beach. I believe they also mentioned a 5K walk. No idea whether it's a competitive-type thing or just for fun.

It's just for fun. Not an "event" by any means. Just a good work out.

Thanks! And the walk sounds extra appealing after what I'm sure will be late nights and too much food on the ship!

DH and I ran the CC 5k on January 15 during our DREAM cruise. There was over 75 ppl! Not surprising since our cruise directly followed the 20th ann Marathon at WDW. Many walkers/joggers/runners of all ages and fitness levels. It's a "fun run" and there is no pressure to finish quickly. We met in Evolution at 8:15 am. Ages 12 + could participate. No need to sign up before-hand. It's not an "excursion" and it's offered during every sailing.

No medal and no running bib. I was disappointed but not surprised. I keep reading that it's very hit or miss with all of the race details and such
They did, however, hand out "race certificates" at the finish line...
I also purchased a T-shirt at the store next to the finish/start line. I believe it was 29.95. I've read about shortages of sizes but I did not experience that. Sizes available from S to XXL.

My friends sailed the Dream and got medals? I'm confused? Wonder if they ran out? I sail in April and I want a medal! I'm a hardware junkie!

My family are big runners and would really like to do this together. My son is 10 but has been running 5Ks since he was 6 and his time blows mine out of the water. I don't understand why it's 12+??

And yes, I agree it's all about the hardware!!

I LOVE me some bling! And I'm sorry it had an age limit on it that prohibits your son from running. I would think it's good to encourage anyone to get out and move. Guess it's just safety precautions

I have teens who have booked the teen excursion would they be able to do the run also? Is it early enough to do before excursion?

On deck, you scabrous dogs! Man the braces! Let down and haul to run free. Now...bring me that horizon

I've seen it reported that the medals are handed out when they have them. I've even seen pics of bloggers wearing a bib for this run.. some report only receiving certificates, some say water bottles.. it's all over the map.

I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

It is an island, after all. They must have to ration these things.

See I've heard some folks saying no medals too! If they don't have them when I run, I'm leaving them my address and they can mail me one

I've done a little more digging and it looks like kids under 12 have run this race, they just have to stay with their parent/guardian.

I'll bring his 5K times if I have to! He will not want miss the opportunity to run this 5K.

Here's a write up of the race:
    http://www.cruisecritic.com/blog/ind...-for-cruisers/

And some of the comments on the boards:
"There is an age limit, I believe, but anyone can do it."
"The Navigator states that runners should be 12 or older - I saw a dad and his daughter running hand in hand - very cute!"

My wife and sis n law walked it. My 10yr old daughter ran it. They all received medals and bib's. We were on the fantasy 2/16/13.

Though the race starts early enough to avoid the worst heat of the day, it still gets plenty hot out on the course unless it's raining. Though the blogger in the link above said the course was simple, it's deceptively confusing, as well. Starting out near the bike rental and getting to the airstrip is easy enough, as is turning onto the bike path off to the right, but at that point, the course begins a dizzying number of curves, twists, and turns that serves to confuse a few folks. I've seen more than one runner come out of that bike path area and go the wrong way on the airstrip, especially when they come out of it on the return leg. On the other hand, all those twists are good for those who are in the race mode vs. a fun run mentality, as you can quicken your strides around the turns when out of view of those in front of you (or behind you), making it more of a cat-and-mouse game which I love to do as it keeps my mind off how much I'm sweating and breathing hard. It's quite an enjoyable run!

My DH, DD, & I did this races at Wednesday. It was great! Yes, after the first bike loop you had to ask which way to go, but then we figured it out. It was great! I love my medal!
