Sept. 4, 1913 – Masatomo Takahashi, whose vision and desire brought a Disney park to Japan, was born in Japan.
Sept. 4, 1918 – Postal employee Walt Disney (who is a substitute mail carrier) was walking through the West Adams Street lobby of the Federal Building in Chicago, Il. When he heard a deafening blast that shook the ground. Someone has planted a bomb, more than 75 were injured and 4 were killed, including a co-worker of Walt’s named William Wheeler. The force of the blast also killed a horse on the street, damaged a streetcar and shattered windows on nearby buildings.
Sept. 4, 1919 – Voice actor and director Howard Morris was born in N.Y.C. He would go on to voice the character of Gopher in Disney’s Winnie-the-Pooh features.
Sept. 4, 1919 – Imagineer Xavier Atencio, a layout artist, character stylist, and lyricist, was born in Trinadad, Co. He would help design the Disneyland Railroad’s Primeval World diorama segment and wrote the script for both “Adventure Thru Inner Space” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” for which he would also pen the lyrics to the theme song, “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me.)” Atencio would also write the script for the “Haunted Mansion” attraction, including the lyrics to its theme song, “Grim Grinning Ghosts (The Screaming Song.)”
Sept. 4, 1922 – The Laugh-O-Gram black & white cartoon “Jack and the Beanstalk” was released. It was directed and co-animated by Walt Disney.
Sept. 4, 1937 – The first formal story conference for Disney’s next scheduled feature “Bambi” took place. Director David Hand announced that animation would begin on Dec. 1st. (Months later Walt would postpone work on “Bambi” and instead begin production on “Pinocchio.”)
Sept. 4, 1942 – Disney’s Goofy cartoon “how To Play Baseball” was released.
Sept. 4, 1945 – Legendary drummer Steve Gadd, who appeared on TV’s “The Mickey Mouse Club” when he was a child during the 1956-1957 season, was born in Rochester, N.Y.
Sept. 4, 1968 – Film and television actor Phill Lewis was born in Uganda. Fans of “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” know Lewis for his comedic as Mr. Moseby, the hotel manager. He has alo appeared as a guest star on the Disney Channel’s “That’s So Raven.”
Sept. 4, 1994 – The Disney TV series “Hardball” began airing on FOX. (Ended Oct. 23, 1994)
