Today in Disney History 2/16
Feb. 16, 1903 – Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen (famous for his wooden dummy Charlie McCarthy) was born in Chicago, Il. His Disney credits include the TV shows “Disneyland ’59,” and “One Hour in Wonderland.” Bergen also portrayed himself in the 1974 “Fun and Fancy Free.” In 1947 Walt Disney himself was a guest on Bergens popular radio show. (Edgar is the father of actress Candice Bergen.)
Feb. 16, 1904 - Actor James Baskett, Uncle Remus in Disney’s “Song of the South” was born in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Feb. 16, 1920 - Patti Andrews, who lent her singing voice to Disney’s “Make Mine Music”, and “Melody Time” was born in Minneapolis, Mn.
Feb. 16, 1945 – Frank Welker, Hollywood’s “voice god,” was born in Denver, Co. His Disney credits include “Mulan II,” “The Search for Mickey Mouse,” “The Lion King 1 ½,” “Kim Possible: Revenge of the Monkey Fist,” and “Return to Neverland.” (Cartoon fans may recognize his voice as Fred Jones in various Scooby Doo cartoons and animated features.
Feb. 16, 1953 – Newsweek featured an article on the Disney Studios and their latest hit “Peter Pan.”
Feb. 16, 1955 – The Disney TV Show “Cavalcade of Songs” aired.
Feb. 16, 1960 - Annette Funicello performed “O Dio Mio” on TV’s American Bandstand.
Feb. 16, 1964 – Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color aired part-2 of “The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh,” starring Patrick McGoohan.
Feb. 16, 1966 - Disney’s live action film “The Ugly Dachshund”, starring Dean Jones and Suzanne Pleshette was released.
Feb. 16, 1978 – Actor, singer, puppeteer, and dancer John Tartaglia, the last to play the role of Lumiere in Disney’s Broadway musical “Beauty and the Beast,” was born in Maple Shade, N.J.
