    Default The Open Championship

Does anyone know why they're explicitly NOT calling it the British Open?

I'm fairly certain it has always been called "The Open Championship."

I guess the people you refer to have decided to call it by its proper name.

Through the whole broadcast, the guys on ABC called it "The Open Championship". At one point, during a prerecorded interview with Tom Watson, he seemed to hesitate when he referred to the tournament, then said the proper name (instead of "The British Open".).

It just sounded different from previous years.

I wonder if it's because the tournament is played in Scotland some. Trying to be a little more sensitive even though it's technically still Great Britain.

It has always been known as the "Open" Championship. It may be called the British Open so it doesn't confuse with the US Open.
