Okay, I know that July and August are going to be peak periods. I also know that some of the states start back to school in Aug.
Would it be better to plan my trip closer to the end of Aug or would it make much difference from my original thought of the 1st/2nd weeks of Aug?

To be completely honest, there is no better or worse time in July/August since the entire world does vacation during those months ... I would just suggest that your stay have Monday-Thursday if possible and you want to try and find a day with a bit lower crowds. Summer high season is BUSY and hot in SoCal.

I've visited at the end of July into August and did not find the crowds terrible. We got up early and took advantage of Magic Mornings. If it got too bad at Disneyland we headed for California Adventure.
