E ticket rides go back to the days when every ride cost a ticket. Guests would buy a ticket book containing A tickets through E tickets, with the E tickets being for the most popular ride. Not much else to it, as far as I know. If you buy the new Disneyland Secrets DVD, it has a replica of these tickets. Pretty cool addition to a pretty cool DVD.
Believe in the future, the world is getting better, there is still plenty of opportunity.

I still have a ticket book from our first visit in 1976 that has a couple of A tickets left.

The term an "E-ticket" means ultimate in thrills. Ticket books were introduced in 1955 containing A,B,and C tickets. The D tickets were added in 1956, and the E ticket were added in 1959.

While the term "E-ticket" has come to mean an ultimate thrill ride, E-tickets weren't limited to just the thrill rides - but were required for the most popular rides. At Disneyland, this included, POTC, HM and even It's a Small World.
