How are you trying to open it?

Opening it through Excel or a standard browser should pose no problem.

To preserve some of the proprietary algorithms built into the spreadsheet some parts of the spreadsheet are protected, but opening it should not require a password.

It has been noted that some alternative programs apparently try to modify the spreadsheet when opening it and run into this issue.

    Hi Wedway,

I too was presented with the "password" prompt. It doesn't appear to matter what you type-in as the password. After the third try the spreadsheet opened. For me at least.

    Good luck,

i only have microsoft works with my xp home package, not excel. it will sometimes modify .xls files to open them, so this must be the case.

thanks to both of you for the help- i hope the calculator will tell me i'll save enough with the dining plan to pay for the excel program i needed to open it!
