Strange... It doesn't show up on any refurb calendars...
On another note, Disney usually announces big moves like this. But who knows.
I agree...I thought it was strange it isn't on the rehab calendar and when you pull up my magic +, it still showed it as active....but, trust me, I was there and it was not open and a scrim was up over the waterfall and the water wasn't running for 10 days.
Someone mentions some much needed sprucing up and fixing some rock work as to why the scrim is suddenly up... They say it has nothing to do with adding Frozen into the attraction... Thankfully...
It does need cleaned/spiffed up.
I'm not going to lie though, I do think they should at least add the beautiful ice castle in the last scene and remove the oil rig.
They could totally do it to be beautiful in true Disney castle style [no characters or anything] but the architecture could be incredible.
I think Frozen could make a good retro-fit into the Malestrom boat ride... they could take out that theater at the end and maybe expand the building further and make the ride longer. Like a Frozen version of POTC, the potential is there. I don't think anyone has a *strong* attachment to Malestrom.
I think, with the management shake up at Epcot today, Frozen in Norway is not going to happen...
Tom Fitzgerald is now in charge of Creative Direction of Epcot... And I believe they have a new manager of operations as well... But Tom Fitzgerald being put in the creative lead for Epcot, HOPEFULLY, brings Epcot back to its original roots... He is known for some clunkers lately, and loving screens, but he also has the background and passion for what Epcot used to stand for... Hopefully that's a good sign... If he truly believes in the old Epcot, Frozen will be buried deep in the Florida swamps never to be built in Norway....
I think, once they get around to an Epcot over haul, Future World will be the main target...
Ah, got it. Thank you!
It does need some overhauling I'll admit. I'm not going to lie, I think a little bit of frozen in Maelstorm might be cool. However, I'd really love to see some "roots"
I really wish I was living here when some of the old school attractions where still there!
Sorry, I have to disagree. Walt Disney knew the power of synergy with his studio's movies and the parks. Shoot, the castle in Disneyland was supposed to be Snow White castle and it was changed to Sleeping Beauty castle due to that movie being released.
Frozen is one of the biggest movies the studios has had in a long time. It was based in Norway. You could make the Maelstrom ride into a Frozen attraction and then incorporate the characters into a Norway Movie using the same techniques used in Roger Rabbit, updated to current technology, of course.
This wouldn't ruin the ride in the least, and it may, if done correctly, bring more people into World Showcase and actually watch the Norway Movie again.
And you don't have to make it like the Mexico ride. It could be done well with respect to Norway and to the movie.
To complain about the characters in Epcot is to sit in the past and pine for Horizons.
Forget Frozen in World Showcase... Think France... think a rat in France... Think Ratatouille... Wonder why Tom Fitzgerald is now the creative lead in Epcot??? He is the creative lead, or was, in Disneyland Paris where, coincidence, they will be opening the mega e-ticket Ratatouille dark ride/coaster hybrid... And looking at the pictures of the sets, WOW...
Now, I still don't like the idea of animated characters in World Showcase, but at least Ratatouille makes some sense since the movie took place in a real city/country.. Paris, France... This ride belongs in Pixar Place in DHS, and would help spread the family friendly crowds out... That park needs it... But it seems the Ratatouille to France pavilion rumor is gaining steam... maybe needs its own thread to discuss this... Going off topic here...
actually, I think they should leave the ride the way it is but instead of the always passed over movie at the end play the frozen sing along songs at the end. My kids for certain would love to stay and sing.
After seeing 4 hour wait times to meet Anna and Elsa, I don't know how they could NOT turn Maelstrom into Frozen. The mania around that movie, the characters and the merchandizing has been insane. We love Maelstrom, but we certainly wouldn't be heartbroken with a change.
We would also love a Ratatouille ride and an overhaul of Future World!
......to answer the title of this thread ...and based on some recent articles .....it seems that "sooner than you may want" could be the answer regarding the Maelstrom makeover.....
Say goodbye to Norway, and the World Showcase as we know it... September/October close down possible... The dumbing down of Walmart Disney World continues...
.....the "Frozen-ization" of Norway & Maelstrom.
.....Capt EO goes buh-bye
.....Sorin' closes for a revamping / makeover ....something like "Soarin Around The World" has been hinted at.
...and ....
....at DHS ...Great Movie Ride closes for a makeover ...or change to something else.
....and some other stuff ....of course it's "rumors" ......but I don't see any 'official' WDW spokesperson refuting any / all of the "rumors".
....at this point ....I do not care to speculate about what will happen. It's been clear for a while that WDW has been making their parks and attractions ...in particular the ones at Epcot ... "educationally accessible" to about a 3rd grade level guest. (ie the narration in Spaceship Earth ...those inane cartoon ducks, parrots ...whatever! ...in Mexico on the boat ride.)
.....maybe this is this a way for WDW to "spread the crowd"? Meaning ...put a child themed attraction in Epcot WS ...draw more of the "younger crowd" (kids) there ...and in turn take the people-load off MK? (and spread the spending load to there). I only say that because it's been my experience to hear many persons (friends. etc) say they hate Epcot because it's an "adult place" ...and thus their kids are bored and whine when they go there.
Can't attest to the rumors JerseyDad posted other than Frozen in Norway... There have been several proposals, and none of them make things better... Oh and Rat is still a thing for France pavilion, but is moved behind Frozen in Norway as priority...
One of the rumors (and I want to again stress rumor, though this does come from someone trusted) is the entire Norway pavilion will be rethemed to Arendelle or however you spell it... Frozen would then take the place of Maelstrom, with some AAs tossed in, screen effects, and thats it... Basically, taking a real life country out of World Showcase and replacing it with a made up fairytale country thus killing what World Showcase is supposed to be about...
Another rumor is Norway staying as is with just a value engineered, cheap Frozen overlay with some small AA's, screens, and that's it.. Nothing fancy, nothing grand for the number one animated movie of all time... Just a cheap overlay cause "heck, they are tourists and Disney defenders!!!! We can do anything and they will line up like good little boys and girls ready to hand us their child's college fund!!!!"...
And yet another rumor is nothing changing at all... No Frozen overlay, but a major sprucing up of Maelstrom with new AA's, updated show scenes, etc...
Now, two of these will require WDW actually spending money... Two of these make no sense at all... Two of these should never happen cause it will be the final nail in Epcot's coffin... Only one makes sense cause it stays true to World Showcase and its meaning... So, guess which one they are more likely to go with????
Number two cause it is cheap, kills Epcot off, and makes it MK 2.0...
