View Full Version : Need ideas, souvenir-related

We are heading to WDW in September, and I was wondering what are the most unique or creative souvenirs you've found at the theme parks (not resorts)? It doesn't have to be something you buy, maybe something you make or from a show??? I have a 9-year-old son and we have been to the World many times, but I am getting tired of requests for the same old types of souvenirs and hope to re-direct him to something new or different.

I was going to post this in shopping and nightlife but I was kind of hoping for the aid of the die-hard Theme Park posters! I'm sure there must be some really neat things out there that I'm not aware of.

Thanks--

How about the pressed penny books... my girls had a blast finding machines, choosing designs and now they look at them and talk about where in the World each one came from.

You could make some fun little game like finding the Hidden Mickeys or trying to meet as many characters as possible. And then take pictures of all the Hidden Mickeys or characters. Then the "souvenir" part comes in. Buy a special WDW photo album for the pictures. Just a thought!

I'm now starting to ge the miniature replicas of the ride vehicles every time I go. I really like them, and I feel like I have part of the ride with me all the time.

Are the miniature vehicles at the little kiosks I am always steering my little ones away from???

Is there a Dumbo available, or a tea-cup???

Last time we went we needed an excuse to get autographs and take pictures of the charcters. My wife took the autograph book and next to each signature we put the charcters picture and we gave it to a little girl we know. We had a ball getting the signatures and pitures. I hope to do it again this Nov.

To GreatBigBeautifulTomorrow. I'm pretty sure both the teacup and Dumbo are available. You can usually find them in the giftshops in the parks and the resorts.

Both are available.

I have been resisting the temptation to collect these but I do have a Peter Pan boat.

I might pick up some more next time I go down.

Thanks for all the suggestions! All of you have given me ideas that are fun but not pricey. My son just turned 9 and still loves stuffed animals as souvenirs, but he's got so many that they have invaded and totally taken over the top bunk on his bed (the Evil Dolls are nothing compared to these stuffed animals). I would love to get him a complete monorail set (actually that is my dream souvenir), but I can't see dishing out more money for a toy than I do for our entire stay at the BC! (All right, I am exaggerating a little!)

Anyway, thanks again and if you all think of any other ideas before September 14, let me know! http://www.intercot.com/boards/bounce.gif

My kids adore the pressed pennies, I get them each a book, and I limit it by telling them when they find a machine to choose one of the 3 designs and save the other 2 for the next trip! Also ears are wonderful, and a pin of their favorite character, they don't cost much and are unique. We also always get one of those rubbery frames with the magnet on the back to put a trip picture in and add to our fridge gallery!

They are available at most of the Resort and Park gift shops. You can find them in the autograph book and photo album section. If I recall correctly, they cost around $5.

My 7 y/o son really enjoys the pressed pennies. He always goes through our penny jar before leaving on vaction to find the shiniest pennies for the machines.

Too bad there's no "vehicle" in the Carousel of Progress!!! These sound so cool, I will search on my October trip...how about a Honey Pot?

BTW, I let my kids each select ONE and only ONE pressed quarter, promised they could press ONE and only ONE each trip. They CHERISH that quarter, because they were so careful in choosing it and because they have ONE and only ONE to shine with all the pennies! I made it a BIIIIIIIIIG deal. Kids are so cool.

MNNHFL,

I re-read your response, and saw where you mentioned the monorail. Did you know the "Attraction Vehicles" also have a monorail? It's smaller, of course, and it doesn't run on track, but it only costs $10 or $15. I have that one, too, and it makes a nice display. Just another option if you don't want to spend the money on the big one.

WOOHOO!!! This is such good news, inkydinkydoo!!! I am a HUGE monorail fan, but the only models I have heard of up to this point are the pricey ones MNNHFL mentioned. Now I can have my very own monorail without dishing out mucho dinero! http://www.intercot.com/boards/smile.gif Thanks for making my day! http://www.intercot.com/boards/smile.gif

Edited to add: YES! There's a honey pot! I have that one, too. Also, the hearse from the haunted mansion, a safari vehicle, a splash mountain vehicle, Peter Pan's ship, and others I'm not remembering right now. And, you can find them all over the place. I bought some at Downtown Disney, but I remember the monorail came from a shop in the Animal Kingdom (of all places!!). Happy hunting!

You know how they take your picture on the Tower of Terror and other rides...always be sure to take the card they give you with your picture number on it. You might not want the picture but the little card is a great ride momento!!

Wow Noahjack that's just what i did when I went in June!!!!

If you want a special gift, you could get him a beautiful hand drawn picture of his favorite Disney character, then possibly get the character to sign it !
(I got a picture of Br'er Fox http://www.intercot.com/boards/supergrin.gif )

they cost about $35

I always grab a few "clean" maps at the end of our trip to stash away to see what has changed.

Pin Trading is very fun and is nice way to spark conversations with CMs. You may want to check your local Disney store to see if they have some pins (there will soon be new "100 years of magic" pins released and at least last time they sold pins they were cheaper than at the park).

Has he done the passport thing in Epcot yet - they sell a passport book that you take to each country and get a stamp and write notes in the book.

The small ride vehicles that are available that I can remember are:

Peter Pan
Teacups
Dumbo
Honey Pot
Jungle Cruise
Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin (the coolest one IMHO)
Dinosaur
Killamanjaro Safari
Space Mountain
Splash Mountain
(hmmm surprised there isn't a Tower of Terror or Rock N Rollercoaster)

Slightly bigger (more expensive) Ones:
Monorail
Train
BTMRR
Haunted Mansion Hearse (Don't take it out of the box - the reigns have no support)

Thanks again for all the responses!

I do have the little monorail that was mentioned earlier (it's my souvenir, not my son's!) But I really like the idea of the little ride vehicles because we go to WDW fairly often and it would be a good small souvenir for each trip.

We have done the pressed pennies, too, but I didn't realize there was a book you could get to display them in.

Cool ideas.... http://www.intercot.com/boards/ksmile.gif

One more idea...

My boys still love their stuffed animals too (they are now 11 & 14 http://www.intercot.com/boards/smile.gif ).

Anyway, on one trip several years ago, we let them each bring one SMALL animal (kinda Beanie Baby sized, that fit in their backpack) and we took "souvenir photos" of them and their animal in lots of different places.

In Epcot we had them pose for photos trying on hats of the different countries. Or sometimes the animal would "find" a small toy that he posed for a picture with. Or they'd pose in front of the sign for a favorite ride... you get the idea.

It was CHEAP, and FUN and EASY to do. And we went in each store or kiosk knowing we were only taking pictures, not buying http://www.intercot.com/boards/wink.gif

On one trip, I made a "scavenger hunt" of places or things to take pictures of. Easy things to find, but the kids had to find them and take the pictures themselves. We used the disposable cameras, and I chose 27 items to photograph. They were proud of their pictures, because they took them themselves!

For each of the above photo ideas, we purchased a special album on the trip to keep the pictures in.

We've also done the passports, pressed pennies, Kidcot crafts, etc. But I get the feeling you've also done all these things and are looking for new ideas.

Have fun http://www.intercot.com/boards/supergrin.gif

Don't know how well these will travel back home, but at the Japan pavillion at Epcot in front of the big department store they have a kiosk where a CM comes out and makes the most beautiful animals out of candy. You pick the animal from a displayed list and the color and they make it from what looks to be pulled taffy and they "paint" on the features with what I presume is food coloring. They are truly works of art, too pretty to be eaten. And best of all, they are totally free. They do wrap them up in cellophane, so if you were careful and got a box for it, I think you could get it home okay. One woman there said she had kept one for at least six months.
