View Full Version : Fall Season - Any buzz on new shows?

This section of the forum has been pretty dead of late.

I've spent most of the summer trying to clear out the dvr from last season (had two seasons of Survivor to catch up on, still 6 episodes to go on that and entire season of Blacklist).

Looking at upcoming dvr recordings I see that Blindspot starts up soon as does Gotham, but I've not heard or read any buzz on new fall shows.

Anyone current on what new shows look good and should be starting soon?

I was just thinking the same thing. Other than a few ads ... I'm not even sure what is coming new. We are planning to watch the "CBS Preview" tonight to see if there is anything neat.

So far, from what I have heard, I think I'm most interested in "Designated Survivor."

"Designated Survivor" looks interesting, but I keep thinking Jack Bauer in the White House!!!! LOL

I am looking forward to This Is Us. That's the only one I have seen previews for. I need to see what else there is!

Saw over the weekend a preview for a new show premiering October 3, called Timeless. Stars Goran Visnijic, not sure if he is the main actor or not, but only one I recognized from his days on ER.

Time travel shows always pique my interest and I'm loathe to get hooked on them as they seem to have a very bad track record for making past the first season, if even that. Got burned by Journeyman and New Amsterdam back to back. Part of the reason I never started watching Forever, which I heard was good but got axed early.

Not much buzz that I can see, other than more reality type shows.

Journeyman had that Quantum Leap feel to it, and I think I heard that at some point, either on line or elsewhere, they did broadcast the remaining episodes. That was back in 2007 and I just remember getting sucked into 3 or 4 shows that at best were able to air their initial 13 episode orders or worse, like Journeyman, get axed before airing all the episodes that were filmed.

We took a few chances last season with Blindspot and Quantico, and they both survived to see Season 2 but the norm for me is to dvr any new show that looks to have potential, and then if early reviews seem to give it a shelf life longer than a month or two, I'll take a shot on watching it.

I never saw TOUCH.

Oh my gosh, the premiere of This Is Us was on last night and it was amazing!! Did anyone else happen to catch it?

Pretty certain I saw this on our DVR. If its the one I'm thinking of, its as my wife referred to it as "her new Parenthood".

Probably not for me.

Yes and I really liked it! I also like NCIS New Orleans which is on at the same time. For now, I DVR'd NCIS:NO and will watch This is Us while it airs.

I was a bit disappointed with the show Bull. I want to like the show as I like Michael Weatherly, but I was not into the first episode. I will give it a few weeks to see if I grow to like it more. Next new show I am interested in watching is the MacGyver reboot on Friday.

Did anyone else watch Designated Survivor? I didn't really like it that much. Not sure whether to stick with it a bit longer or not.

Watched it and it played pretty much as expected -- a cross between 24 and Quantico. Understand that they only started setting up the premise and the characters in the first episode, so there is a growing curve with this one. I'm going to give it another episode or two before I make my decision -- Find out what is going on with the FBI agent and see what kind of backbone the new president actually has.

Unfortunately, unlike 24, there doesn't seem to be a lot of action for Sutherland's character.

I actually liked Bull. The premise, anyway, that you can analyse and predict what a jury will do. The story in the first episode was a bit weak, but will have to see if the show can stand around the premise and characters.

MacGuyver had all the fun of the original series and quite a bit of the "sciency stuff." I will have to see if the characters fit well together. An African-American woman as Thornton was a nice surprise and the twist early on with Mac's girlfriend/associate worked nicely. Lots of throwbacks to the original show, not the least being The Phoenix Foundation reveal at the end of the episode. I will be watching this one.

So far I've watched the two episodes of Timeless and four episodes of Designated Survivor.

I can't say that I'm blown away by either. Both are relying on what I would assume to be a slowly revealed mystery, with Timeless, is what is the real timeline and is the bad guy trying to restore or destroy it. The show hasn't revealed the mystery, so they are free to go wherever they want, Hindenburg crash, then assasination of Abe Lincoln, next week Vegas circa Rat Pack era. Having one of the main actors be black seems to cause some problems they overlook. He seemed to have a bit too much freedom, even being in the north during the civil war. Its only been two episodes, but it hasn't quite grasped me yet. They need to focus on the Garcia Flynn character, that seems to be where the show is headed.

With Designated Survivor, the bomb plot will be like an onion, revealed and peeled back in layers. Unfortunately it feels a bit like a watered down West Wing and I haven't liked that many of the characters are extreme caricatures, like the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Governor of Michigan (and really can't Michael Gaston ever play a good guy?). It using Quantico's playbook to some extent, but like Timeless, hasn't really grabbed me yet.

We'll see.

Has anyone watched a show called Speechless with Minnie Driver? Really funny. We are working our way through Designated Survivor, it's not really our kind of show. We are more of a regular Survivor, Hell's Kitchen kind of household but we have been watching This Is Us and love it (but we loved Parenthood.)

Indeed! Speechless is the best new comedy of 2016. Minnie Driver is and always has been great!

So ABC seems to have taken the approach of identifying a segment (Asian/90s, gay/Irish, handicapped, Jewish/80s, etc.) and build a show around it. Overall it's worked very well. The Goldbergs, Fresh Off the Boat and Speechless are all great shows, but I'm just not feeling it for The Real O'Neals. Maybe it's just that the writing is bad?

PS, a close runner up for best new comedy would be The Good Place. Frozen's Kristen Bell is a fairly good actress in her own right too.

I'm trying to watch Conviction and Matt LeBlanc's new show. I forgot Matt's last week and Conviction last night. I hear there's going to be a Raven reboot at some point. Why??

Now that we have a toddler and DH and I work opposite hours, we don't have much time for TV watching together :(
I don't think we will be picking up any new shows this fall. We still have a backlog of existing shows we are interested in or need to finish. I was interested in Timeless-alas, I don't have the time ;)

I find Timeless to be a bit uneven. Some of the episodes have been very interesting, like the Las Vegas 1961 episode, but then you get an episode like tonight on the French and Indian war which did not capture my interest. Next week's episode is about the moon landing, so I have hope it will be better.
