So I am now an expert on all the nuances of WDW FP system but know nothing about DL. How many days ahead of time can you reserve FPs or is it only when you are in the parks like the old WDW system? Is there any advantage to staying on property? Thanks

Disneyland and California Adventure use the paper Fastpass distribution process. Go to each participating attraction's kiosk to receive your Fastpass on the day of your visit.

An exception is the World of Color and Fantasmic! which offer the options of making dining reservations which include Fastpasses. These reservations may be made up to 60 days in advance.

Are the FP systems in California Adventure and Disneyland Park linked or can you hold an FP in both parks at the same time?

FP systems in DCA and Disneyland are NOT linked. You can have a Fastpass from each park at the same time. The entertainment Fastpasses such as World of Color are not linked to anything at all. They are totally different than the attraction Fastpasses so you may hold them at any time as well.
