At 12 he will be given adult DDP credits. That's something they need to change in the reservation system IMO as it can be quite confusing. Last year DS showed up as a child on our ADR's and he was 17.

After 9 you are an Adult - well at least in the eyes of Disney and their dining plan. ENJOY!

Counter service credits aren't tracked by child/adult, you will simply see a count of those remaining. But they track TS by adult/child so I think you definitely want/need to get that adjusted in their system so that you don't run into problems at the restaurants when he orders off the adult menu.

The problem is that you may not have the right total # of adult TS so they may take 3 off for the night and you might not notice. By the end of the trip you end up short on adult TS and over on kids TS. They are right, he can still order off the adult menu, but you need to have the correct allotment of adult TS to begin with.

We skip the dining plan because our 16yo is a bit particular. Additionally, the amount of food with a kids meal is usually enough for her. 9 times out of 10 the server will let her order from the kids menu for no additional charge. I don't think they could technically force anyone to order off the adult menu. Our 12yo on the flip side prefers the adult menu and eats most anything. We still skip DDP because the math just doesn't add up.
