I am going to put this here since this is about the cruise line, but at the same time, it is only a rumor... Mods, if you feel this belongs in the News/Rumor thread, then please move...

Is Disney getting ready to sign off on two more Cruise ships? Iger is said to have petitioned the BoD for not only money for DHS and a DL project to make Tomorrowland more cohesive, but also for two more Disney Cruise Line ships...

The names that are rumored they may use? Disney IMAGINATION and Disney SPIRIT...

Their biggest problem right now is lack of choices. Yes, they run a number of itineraries, but they are more seasonal than the other cruise lines. Couple more ships would be a welcome addition. They don't appear to have any trouble filling up the ships they have either...

They definitely need more ships. It is frustrating that they send two of their ships to Europe and Alaska every summer, thus limiting the availability of cruises out of Florida and driving the prices up during those three months. They need two ships dedicated to the 3-4 day Bahamas sailings, IMO, one Dream Class and one Magic class. Or, they need to have one going out of Miami or San Juan to do the Southern Caribbean full time.

However, the fact is that the shipyard that Disney has contracted to build future ships is booked for, I think, the next two years on other cruise ship construction projects, so the earliest they could BEGIN building another Disney ship is 2016, which would make delivery somewhere around 2017 timeframe, at the earliest.

Meyer Werft is the shipyard, and they were granted "future options" for Disney Cruise Line, but they are booked as follows:

Looking ahead, new ships that will be build are:

2013 AIDAstella (71,300 GT, AIDA Cruises)

2013 Norwegian Breakaway (144,000 GT, Norwegian Cruise Line)

2014 Project Sunshine 1 (158,000 GT, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines)

2014 Norwegian Getaway (144,000 GT, Norwegian Cruise Line)

2015 Project Breakaway Plus (163,000 GT, Norwegian Cruise Line)

2015 Project Sunshine 2 (158,000 GT, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines)

When I first heard/read about the rumor Disney wants two new cruise ships, I figured 2016/2017 time frame... This schedule kind of frames the time just right... thanks Nat!

As someone who has been fortunate to be on two Disney cruises (we'll try Royal Caribbean next year), I would love more ships. The Disney level of service is worth every penny. I''ll plan on sailing every year I'm healthy and wealthy enough to do so.
