Have a friend who is staying at POP and they saw a lot of activity around the pool this afternoon/evening. Rumor is a drowning at the POP Century pool.

A quick google search shows a posting on another Disney forum around 9:30PM this evening with the same report.

So very sad. Aboslutely horrific for that family, my prayers will be with them. I can't even imagine how this could have happened! We have stayed at Pop Century a half a dozen times & the life guards that we've seen each time were above reproach with their watch on the pool! I've often watched with great respect for their diligence in the way they carry out their responsibilities! Such a tragic accident. :(

There aren't a lot of details out there yet about this, but it's possible it was already after the life guards had gone off duty for the night.

Very sad indeed. :(

The story I read said 'near drowning'. The condition of the boy was not reported.

Oh my gosh. That is so sad. The boy is 13, and he was "found" at the bottom of the pool? Why was he there all alone? :( NO one should ever swim alone. So tragic. The Sentinel story does not make this sound like a happy ending at all.

:( Wow, that is so sad. So tragic. As Nat sad, the Sentinel certainly does not make this sound like it had a happy ending.

In response to the lifeguards, aren't they off duty at 8pm? I vaguely remember seeing signs posted everywhere that after a certain time it's swim at your own risk.

Yes, I'm certain this was after they were off-duty.

My boys are 13 and 14. This kind of hits home a little too closely. I hope he's okay!

It's being reported this morning that he has survived and is in serious condition. His father apparently began the CPR. Link to Channel 13 story http://www.cfnews13.com/content/news/cfnews13/news/article.html/content/news/articles/cfn/2013/3/11/boy_in_serious_condi.html

Things happen so quickly! A couple of years ago, my then 12 year old son hit the bottom of the pool with his chin. We were chatting at the deck chairs and didn't see ... Horrible accidents happen quite innocently!

My best thoughts for this poor boy and his family.

Good to get more details on the story. I am relieved to hear he was not all alone when this happened.

Just a good reminder about how fast drowning can happen, though. So scary. I hope this boy recovers fully.

Terrible! Thoughts and prayers to his family. Shocking to me that the boy was 12- goes to show that pools and swimming should be taken seriously, no matter the age of the child!

They're reporting on the news here that the boy is still in critical condition. Obviously it's concerning how long he was under water and may have suffered oxygen deprivation. My prayers are with him and his family.

Oh dear, this is worse than the original article. I see the change in the last article update from serious to critical condition. Hoping that he makes a full recovery.

You have stated things so well. Incredibly sad and this time must be almost unbearable for the family. Words really fail to say what most of us feel at this time. Condolences to and prayers for the family.

my heart hurts, but the only consolation is that this kid was probably having the time of his too short life. obviously none of us wants to die, but if i had a choice, running out the clock in WDW would be it for me. Godspeed, buddy.

I read that story and gasped. What a horrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Disney has some of the finest lifeguards around. You can tell they take their jobs seriously.
Does anyone know the reason that Disney stops lifeguard protection at 8 p.m. even though the pools stay open?

Probably because it costs a lot of money to fully staff pools 24/7, and you really can't shut down the quiet pools at the resorts without people getting up in arms about it.

Plus, it is VERY difficult for lifeguards to do thier job after dark. Reflections of lights off the water, limited visibility, etc. I'm sure they'd rather not take the liability risk.

Swimming is dangerous. Swimming at night, moreso.

In any event, this is a very sad situation for this family. I can't imagine how they are feeling right now.

So so sad.

My heart is breaking for the family. CNN reported that the boy was pulled out of the pool after the lifeguards have gone for the night. A firefighter from Buffalo pulled him out and started CPR.

You can never be too careful. I will pray for the family.

RIP young man. May the family find peace sooner than later. Tragic.
Hug your kids when you go home tonite and every other night. Tell them you love them over and over again. Let them know how important they are to you. Talk to them, don't just be around them. Interact with them. Never find yourself in a situation that you have to look back and say to yourself, "If I had only done.......... when i had the chance".

People ask why I go to Disney every year. Its because I want my kids to know that no matter what happens, today/ tomorrow/ next week/ 40 years from now, they are and will always be my everything. They will never doubt this nor will they ever say that I wish I could have done this with my daddy when i had the chance. We live in the now. We regret the unknown and the uncertain and all things out of our control.

My heart breaks at the thought of this family never being able to tell their boy how much he is loved, face to face.

Having read this tragic story, i am sitting at my desk with a pit in my stomach. Like this family, mine is from Missouri. My youngest son just turned 14. And my wife and i were in Disney World last weekend. So to say this hits close to home is a gross understatement.

Such a tragedy is nearly beyond my comprehension. And although i feel ill just thinking about it, i cannot fathom the depths of grief this poor family must endure.

May God's grace give them strength.

My brother in law and niece were swimming that evening in that pool. They saw a boy doing cannonballs and my niece was told that he really shouldn't be doing that.

They left the pool and shortly after saw the ambulance but didn't know what happened until they were asked if they had heard about it, but brother-in-law is pretty sure it had to be the same boy.

Thank you to all the people there that night who tried so desperately to help this young teen. Our prayers are with all of you as well. This will no doubt forever be in your memories. Thank you again for all your efforts.

NJDad, it's just one of those things we have all probably walked away from saying "they shouldn't be doing that" and sometimes you wonder why the parents (and I am in NO way blaming ANYONE) don't say to stop doing whatever it is kids do. They were enjoying a fun night in the pool. Something they couldn't do in Missouri at this time of year. Something we see all the time in Disney pools people enjoying the late night dip in the pool after a long day in the parks.

It's just sad to think this happend my heart is breaking as well for this family. :(
