Got to talking to a friend a work and the movie Space Balls came up. Any way I started thinking about all the movies he has acted in or written. I think my favorite is Young Frankenstein. But there are many that I like. Silent Movie, Worlds Greatest Lover and many more. What is your favorite?

For me, it has to be Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety.

Blazing Saddles has many memories for me, but Space Balls would be a close second.

Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, then History of the World Part 1.

As an aside, Blazing Saddles would never be made today.

History of the World Part I and Spaceballs.

I actually just watched Spaceballs over the weekend on HDNet! So nice to see it unedited.

It's a tie for me between Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. I can watch them over and over and still see something new to laugh about every time.

When we would stay out our timeshare each year at WDW, we would always rent Blazing Saddles. My mom dad, brother, aunt and cousins would all sit around the living room watching the campfire scene and watch it over and over again. We would always laugh so hard. It became an annual non-Disney WDW event.

I'd have to go Blazing Saddles, with History of the World Part I a very close second.

But they're all great, really. Well ... most of them! Maybe not such a big fan of Dracula Dead and Loving It.

Blazing Saddles is my favorite. I've lost count how many times I've seen it. We bought a copy when the version shown on tv had too much cut out.

I really like Young Frankenstein too. I haven't seen History of the World, Part I or Spaceballs in a long time. I'm going to have to check them out again.

Wow, haven't any of you seen The Producers? I'm talking about the original with Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. It was Mel's very first movie, and it's pure genius. Gene Wilder was brilliant as the neurotic accountant, and Zero Mostel was the perfect loud, obnoxious bully. If you've ever heard the expression "If you've got it, baby, flaunt it!," that comes from this movie. It's not slapstick like his later films, it is a bit more of a black comedy. But, the acting is superb and the timing is spot-on. And the musical numbers are pure brilliance. It's very different than the broadway play that he did with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. It was made in the late 1960s, and reflects the time period. For example, the actor who is hired to play Hitler is named Lorenzo St. Dubois, or, as his friends call him "L.S.D." He is an absolutely hysterical hippie who sings a song called 'Love Power'. "If everyone had a flower instead of a gun, there would be no more war! There would be One. Big. Smell In!"

I'm probably Mel Brooks' biggest fan. I'll give you a little trivia. You know the scene in Blazing Saddles where Mongo punches out the horse? That actually happened! Sid Caesar did that, and Mel put it in the movie. Also, did you know that Mel used all of the original laboratory set items from the movie Frankenstein when he filmed Young Frankenstein? He did it to pay respects to the original. And, I bet you didn't know he directed The Elephant Man? He did it under Brooksfilms, because he wanted people to take it seriously. I've got a lot more, if anyone is interested...

I love most of his movies, but the TV series "Get Smart" tops them all.

"Missed it by that much."

"I asked you not to tell me that."
Love, Get Smart.

Blazing Saddles is both visually and verbally funny and is my favorite Mel Brooks movie.
"That's Hedley."

I'm not sure if I can pinpoint why, but I really like High Anxiety.
"Those who are tardy do not get fruit cup. "

But I've seen most often, and always enjoy, Young Frankenstein.
"Ah, sweet mystery of life at last I've found thee." :frank:

:ill::ill: I know its all personal preferences, but as someone that (unfortunately) saw History of the World Part I in the theater, I thought it was one of the worst movies of all times. Only good thing was, History of the World part II was never made. I didn't care for Spaceballs either, considering it was released 10 years after Star Wars it wasn't overly timely and while some of the gags hit, most were major misses.

For me, hands down Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein (which both came out in '74 I believe) were Brooks at his best and still stand the test of time.

When Brooks started putting himself in the movies more (Spaceballs, Robin Hood, History of World) the quality declined severely and the humor was much more forced in your face and not the great writing and subtle humor of his earlier work. He basically went the route of the Naked Gun/Airplane comedies which were more about sight gags and quick one-liners and for me that was Brooks at this worst.

I can recite one liners all day long from BS and YF, not so much from the others.

My favorite is Spaceballs (combing the desert, I love it!) followed by Young Frankenstein. I really want to see more of his movies!

Got to see "The Producers" today original version. Wow very funny and you can see many things that became the standard for later movies. Thank you Disney Dog for recommending it. Also want to correct something in OP I said "Worlds Greatest Lover" was a Mel Brooks film but saw it recently and found out it was written by Gene Wilder. Who knew, he has been in so many Mel Brooks films I just assumed.

Slight correction -- you mean produced, not directed. The director was David Lynch, of Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks fame.

Not only my favorite Mel Brooks movie, but one of my favorite movies, period, is Young Frankenstein. Lines from that movie have ingrained themselves into my family culture. Like: "Stay close to the candles; the staircase can be treacherous."
