July 9, 1998 – WDW auctioned off a limousine, 2 costume sewing machines, a sofa from the Empress Lily Riverboat, and a 4-foot tall beer stein.
July 9, 1999 – Discovery Island at WDW closed 25 years after it opened. The 11-acre zoo had its attendance hurt by the 1998 opening of the 500-acre Animal Kingdom. The closure of Discovery Island was the end to Disney’s 2nd oldest Florida attraction and marked the 1st time the company closed one of its ticketed attractions.
July 9, 1999 – The 100th sailing of the “Disney Magic” was celebrated.
July 9, 2003 – The Disney Gallery at Disneyland celebrated the release of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” with a special event.
July 9, 2003 – Marita Giovanni and Bruce Granham won the Humanitas Prize for writing the 2002 Disney Channel Original Movie “A Ring of Endless Light.”
July 9, 2004 – Sam McKim, the Legendary Disney Imagineer who drew the first souvenir maps of Disneyland in 1954, passed away of heart failure at the age of 79. McKim joined WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) as an illustrator, six months before the opening of Disneyland.
July 9, 2004 – The 7th “phil of the Future” episode “My Way” aired on the Disney Channel for the first time.
July 9, 2006 – Margaret Kerry, the original live-action model for Disney’s Tinker Bell, appeared at the Oakland Museum of California’s exhibit on Disneyland’s 50-year history.
July 9, 2007 – Deconstruction of the 50-ton Mickey Mouse arm and wand, leaning on Epcot’s Spaceship Earth, began. Also coming down are the 36-foot-high “Epcot” letters and colored stars splashing across the sphere.
