We have friends that live in Orlando. We do not live in Florida.

My question- can they buy a 1 day hopper ticket online in advance for our use? They are picking up the tickets, we will use them. I read that they are subject to verification on use- does that mean they check your ID when you actually enter the parks? Thanks for any help!

No, your friends cannot buy you Florida resident tickets. They are for Florida residents, and you must be present with Florida ID when activating.
