View Full Version : Carousel of Progress Poll: is it time to go away?

I'm curious what my fellow Intercotees think about CoP these days. I know some folks absolutely love CoP while others would rather get a root canal than sit through the show.

So, where do you stand?

The Carousel of Progress must remain.
This ride is a classic and an important link to Walt. A refurbishment should be done.

Ditto. When it means nothing to the Disney management (and if two or three people come in, I'll wager they'll keep it open if only for the history it presents and what it means with regard to Animatronics, the Disney way, etc.), they'll take it away. Don't think it will happen in my lifetime, honestly.

I'd be extremely disappointed if COP is ever closed, for us, COP and the Peoplemover are the first things we do when we arrive at WDW.

COP is pure disney, its the perfect start to our vacation, of course id love to see them refurb it, but ive got a feeling they'll close it before they refurb it.

My DH could take Disney or leave it (he goes 'cause we love it.) But the one thing that he absolutely can't miss is COP. He just loves it! We all do actually, but he said he could ride it all day if we let him. It would be nice to see an upgrade of some sort though.

It's one of my favorites. I think that the final scene needs some touch ups, but everything else great. I would be heartbroken if it closed.

Like has been stated before it is a must keep. I can remember this from my childhood and it IS an important link to the past. It probably could use an update--but I do so love it. :mickey:

I am utterly disappointed when it is not open if I am visiting.

No doubt it is a keeper in need of updating.

I mean, that final scene is so unrealistic. The kids are actually actively engaged with their parents and grandparents? They should be sitting on a couch texing their friends throughout the scene.

I'd be really disappointed if they ever got rid of COP. My family and I always do this attraction several times on our trips. Yes, its corny and outdated but thats part of the appeal for me. If nothing else, its a great spot to get a 20 minute air conditioned power nap in the summer.

This should always be an attraction. At a minimum, it could use some cleaning and TLC, if not small update. Im not sure even the last scene should be changed or updated. Maybe best to leave it as a rememberance of how the "future" was viewed.

I predict that COP will never go away. Someone Up There is protecting it. And rightly so. It was a deeply personal project for Walt to work on. He oversaw literally every detail of this attraction. It outlined his own personal journey through the time in which he was born, to ultimately the time in which he passed away. The last scene is so awkward because originally it showcased the "modern" era of the mid sixties! Scene One: Turn of the Century/Scene Two: the 20's/Scene Three: the 40's/Scene Four: the 60's. The last scene is the only one that has been "updated." To me, the leap from the 1940's to the present is very awkward. Personally, I wish they would restore the last scene back to the original scene as it appeared at the New York World's Fair. On another note: I LOVE IT!!!! Long live COP!!!

WDWdriver
04-12-2012, 11:49 PM
It should go on as long as WDW exists. It is as much a part of the Magic Kingdom as "Walt's Window" is to Main Street. For those who know the history of Disneyland and Walt Disney World, this attraction is an essential part of the guest experience and Walt's legacy.

I have had this idea for a while. How about moving CoP to Epcot. Gut the WoL building and put an UPDATED version of CoP there. This adds a needed attraction to Future World which fits the theme and frees up space in Tomorrow Land. (Yes, I know there is a similar theme in SE.)

I have to admit that last year was the first time I was ever on the COP, and now I wonder why I waited! I hope it stays, refurb or not! I can't wait to go on it again this year and see what I missed the first go around. Now that I have read some of the history behind it, I think that it would be some how sacrilegious to remove it!

04-13-2012, 03:54 PM
I say keep it. My daughter absolutel loves it, which shocks me since she is 8 and has loved it for ears. I do admit I don't go on it ever trip, especially with oung kids that don't want to sit still, but my daughter always goes and I think it is a nice relaxing trip back in time.

04-13-2012, 04:05 PM
Seeing as how it's only been open once during my 6 trips (and we hit it because of torrential rains and a short line in the middle of the summer), I can't say I'd miss it if it were gone. If they replaced it with something else, I'd would have no problem with that. But that's just me. I also like the Tiki Room with Iago, the Leave a Legacy monoliths, and the giant Sorcerer's hat - which most people on this board are complete opposite.

There is zero reason to remove it.

Unless someone thinks "well I personally don't enjoy the show and even though I'm in the minority and don't understand the historical significance of the attraction or why it means so much to so many people it should be removed to cater to my interests" is a valid reason.

It isn't.

My wife loves this attraction. She enjoys singing the song and it's the second thing we do entering Tomorrowland after going on Buzz Lightyear a couple of times. We've had a whole theater all to ourselves a couple of times and we both sing along.
It could used a little more updating, but it's still a very unique and entertaining ride. We'd like to cast two votes to keep it forever.

PETE FROM NYC
04-17-2012, 04:46 PM
The original, that is, the Worlds Fair version was my introduction to audio-animatronics. I was 13 at the time in 1964. In the first scene, I would have sworn they were real live people. I had probably seen the WF version about a dozen times.
Fast forward to our first WDW visit in 1975, I was over-joyed to see a familiar attraction.
Yes, I thing it should be updated with two or three additional scenes to fill in the gap. Then just revamp the last one every few years.

Take it away. NEVER!!!

CoP is a *must keep*. This is one my family never misses. Lots of great hidden mickeys in the final scene. We were in Disney for the first week of April and received a "surprise fastpass" for CoP while getting fastpasses for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. My gf was excited and felt that she hit the jackpot with an extra FP. I hope others felt this way and rode it as a result!

Main Street Jim

CoP is the *one* attraction that Walt personally touched; one that Walt *wanted* to remain in the park(s). Walt only set foot on the Florida property one time - in 1966, just before he passed away. CoP is the only connection now between Walt, and Walt Disney World (other than the name of the property, obviously).

Yes, the animatronics need some work - and I noted that to my managers when I worked the attraction. Yes, the scenes need updating - but you can only do so much with only four scenes.

But, CoP needs to stay.

They have already planned to get rid of one of the rides from my childhood Disney memories in Snow White Scary Adventures, they absolutely cannot get rid of COP. Now that I am older I appreciate it so much more and it truly is Disney in my mind. Animatronics is one of the things that facinates me so much about Disney.

In a side note I am writing this post on my last day of my current job. It is a bittersweet day as I am glad to be getting out but I have spent 8 years with the company. Oh well things happen for a reason and I have my new job to look forward to and a few weeks vacation until I start.

Wow, I had no idea the COP was such a hit. I will have to say.... we have never experienced COP! We never spend much time in tomorrow land so I technically really don't even know where it is. Is it in the corner beside buzz? I guess we need to discover it on our next trip!

btharvey
04-25-2012, 09:46 AM
I first experienced it at the 1964 New York World's Fair, and I think I continue to see it from that perspective every time I go.

That being said, I think that if you take it as much as you can at face value, understanding that it was originally not only a showcase for Disney's audio animatronics but also a showcase for seeing how far General Electric had come in the century up to the 60s, you can see that it presents a wonderful picture of the life of 'convenience' throughout the 20th century.

Nowadays, I enjoy Orville, the dog(s), and finally the original 'host' of the show being GrandPa at the end. I see little bits of fun every time I go, plus it is air conditioned and relaxing for a while.

But it really shows me where Walt had gotten to just a few years before his death, while EPCOT (and the original Epcot design) shows where Walt was headed.

For those of you too young to have seen that much progress yet :mickey:, my life is starting to look like the Carousel of Progress, so I never want it to leave.

"Keep Moving Forward" in not only the Meet the Robinsons, the Carousel of Progress, the myriad Disney theme parks, resorts, cruise ships, etc. Can't say it any better way.

...I too am one who first experienced the Carousel of Progress in 1964/65 NY World's Fair. I was 4 years old...but the memory sticks with me to this very day. If it needs a re-furb...fine...clean it up....but don't change the story line...it's just too important to the legacy of CoP.

I don't know how many fellow WDW fans on this board can say it, but, I was at the World's Fair in 1964 ,and rode the original COP prototype....as corny as it seems,it is one of the things NEVER miss at WDW..I have been going since 1971,and could not even begin to count how many times I have ridden that ride!!!! Sure, it could use a little touching up,but to get rid of the original spirit of the ride would be blasphemous..IMHO...All you have to do is watch the video outside to see how truly far ahead of his time Walt truly was...just one man's opinion...:mickey:

I think because the last scene can never keep up with the actual present technology, I think the attraction should be restored to the way it originally was when Walt built it. Make it a "tribute" of sorts to Walt's original vision.

and the list goes on......
To be fair though, Typhoon Lagoon didn't replace River Country - they used to be open at the same time. And Animal Kingdom didn't replace Discovery Island. But it's true - without some things going by the wayside, we wouldn't ever have anything new to enjoy unfortunately.

I'm mixed. Some things should remain because they feel like tradition and bring back warm memories of times past. Yet, things change, and sometimes the old must give way to the new. Some of my favorite attractions are nothing but memories now but many have been replaced by new favorites such as:

Buzz Lightyear in place of If You Had Wings
Winnie the Pooh in place of Mr Toad's Wild Ride
Test Track in place of World of Mission
Mission:Space in place of Horizons
Animal Kingdom in place of Discovery Island
Typhoon Lagoon instead of River Country
Monsters, Inc instead of the Timekeeper

and the list goes on......

While I love Buzz, i still miss my dreamflight. NIce, relaxing, fun ride. I miss all of the old omnimover/dark rides.

I'd rather have my Mr. Toad and Horizons. WofMOtion i think fit Epcot better, but I do enjoy TT.

Monster INC, AK are great improvements... But some things that bring you in, are the nostalgia of the past... I think the newer generations, don't think/feel along those lines, and will have a harder time associating with disney..

:mickey: COP must stay! It would be such a shame for it to go. Too many great attractions have gone away as it is - 20,000 leagues, Skyway, etc.

Definitely a keeper! I wish they would take the final scene back to the original or something similar though. There is such a huge gap from the 40's scene to the "future" scene that it is kind of crazy. Or even if they made it into a Horizon like final scene I would be happy.

The Carousel of Progress must remain.
This ride is a classic and an important link to Walt. A refurbishment should be done.
Completely agree with this.

Agree 100%! Our last visit in 2010 I went by and looked between the boards to see the old 20,000 leagues area... great memories. Now all that is gone with the Fantasyland expansion. CoP is a must see each time. I'm sure our children will be having the same conversations in 15 or 20 years but it will be whether Buzz Lightyear or Soaring or Mission Space should be dismantled as those will be their childhood favorites.

Maybe best to leave it as a rememberance of how the "future" was viewed.
You should have seen it in 1983

I hope if/when my son has kids,he'll take them to WDW and take them to COP and tell them that "your grandpa took me on this ride every time we came here and I hope you will appreciate it as I now do".:D

I would be so disappointed if they ever took that away! It's something Walt was involved with and something many of us remember from our visits to MK. It has that Disney Magic that has to stay!:mickey:

I don't know how many fellow WDW fans on this board can say it, but, I was at the World's Fair in 1964 ,and rode the original COP prototype....as corny as it seems,it is one of the things NEVER miss at WDW..I have been going since 1971,and could not even begin to count how many times I have ridden that ride!!!! Sure, it could use a little touching up,but to get rid of the original spirit of the ride would be blasphemous..IMHO...All you have to do is watch the video outside to see how truly far ahead of his time Walt truly was...just one man's opinion...:mickey:

How cool is that!!!!

Actually, I can say this too!

I think they should revamp the last scene to make it more futuristic. That would give it legs and justify it being in "Tommowland." As it now stands, most of the items there are not that futuristic.

It has to stay! Since the first time I experienced it I instantly fell in love with its simplicity and charm. I'll usually check it out at least twice per vacation. I'd be genuinely heartbroken if it went away.

It should stay and get a major major rehab.

It is the only attraction Walt had a hand in that remains at WDW. I say keep it.

I have to confess I haven't done Carousel of Progress once in my last 5 visits to Disney World. That said, I hate to see things just discarded, and wish there were a way to refurbish it and perhaps make it interactive to resurrect interest in it...rather than just leave it as is as a quaint piece of nostalgia.

COP forever! And please leave the 2 left shoes on Dad; always something fun to point out to new Disney visitors.

I dont think its time for this ride to go away this was one of Walts original Ride Ideas and I mean it was already sad that Snow Whites Scary Adventures had to go I love these rides and Im not one of those people who have had this ride all their life and I still enjoy all the older rides. These Rides are Walt Disneys Legend so I think if you get rid of all the rides that Walt imagined the park wouldnt be as Magical. So im against getting rid of this ride 100%.

I concur!:number1:

This is a staple of Walt Disney World. While parts of the ride may be outdated and the technology is no longer as impressive as something like the modern-day animatronics of Buzz Lightyear, I really wish every guest at Disney World would take the time to appreciate where Disney innovation all started. Of course, when I see the queue is typically at the five minute mark, I realize that it has sadly become an overlooked attraction, in favor of something more glitzy and glamorous. My family and I, however, make it a point to visit this attraction at least once every visit and I hope to continue to do so for as long as we keep returning to the World. :mickey:

To me, they need to keep it until someone identifies the third child, the little "Mother's Helper" in the first scene, powering the washing machine.

But it is an icon...so long as they keep the castle, they need to keep CoP. We start each trip with PoC, and end with CoP.
