View Full Version : Do you have a tattoo or body piercing?

Aurora

I was reading another thread and then an article about tattoos and body piercings. The article said that one in four Americans between 18 and 50 have a tattoo (one in three between 18 and 29), and that almost half between 18 and 29 had either a tattoo or piercing in an area other than their earlobe.

So where are you in the percentage?

(Please, no judgments or snarky comments in this thread!)

Same here. I waited until I was 19 to have my ears pierced. Stopping with that.

There wasn't an option for both.
I have two tattoos (one is of Tinkerbell ) and three piercings in each ear which I have holes but never wear earring in them, but I also have a navel ring that I do always wear.

I used to have pierced ears, but stopped wearing earrings so they've closed up.

I didn't get the chance to put in two votes. I have my ears, nose, and monroe pierced. I also have 8 tattoos with a 1/4 sleeve on the way. Surprisingly I am a teacher and behavior specialist and no one has ever cared about my body art I guess it makes me quirky.

I have my ears pierced, but haven't worn earrings in probably 15 years.

My daughter has 2 holes in each ear and 1 flower tattoo on the top of her foot.

I have 3 tattoos...all very hideable in my professional life. 2 of them are very meaningful to me, the other I got when I turned 18 because I wanted to be a rebel...ahh, youth!

I have four tattoos--right shoulder, left hip, right ankle, and left wrist (just got that one about 8 weeks ago). They're all very meaningful to me, and I can hide most of them if I want (when I got the last one my artist asked if this was my first LOL). My ankle has my daughter's name on it, in her handwriting. Once she gets her cursive to look...better LOL (J's are hard!)...I'm going to add her name to my wrist tat.

I have one set of earrings I wear, but at one point I think I had nine holes for earrings. And my navel was pierced but not for long.

I have two tattoos. I HAD a belly button ring prior to having babies. Haven't worn it since stretch marks and belly ring don't mix. :D It is still open though.

I'm 43. No tattoos, because I'm a little scared both of the process and that I would change my mind and regret it later. Also, only my ears are pierced.

When I was 16, I wanted to get them double-pierced but my mom said no. So, I did the second hole on my left ear myself with a thick needle and an ice cube, then felt a little head rush and never got around to doing the right ear. I never wear earrings in that second left ear hole, but I try now and then and I'm always shocked that it's still open. That's the extent of my rebellion. I was usually happy to let my older sister be the rebel while I got the praise for doing the right thing. My husband (47) and son (21) are tattoo and piercing free. My daughter(18) only has her ears pierced (when she was 8 and I told her it wouldn't hurt much and have never lived it down).

Both of my ears are double-pierced, but the second holes have closed up. After DD is born in May, I plan to get the second holes re-opened, and eventually get a third piercing in both ears.

I'm 44. I had my belly pierced before kids(twice). I also have 2 tattoos - 1 I just got a month ago. It is an ankle bracelet in the shape of Mickey ears:mickey: The other is on my lower back on the right side. I'm a nurse so mine aren't seen at work. Even in 2012 I believe a lot of people still have a misconception about people with tattoos and piercings.

No tats, I am terrified of needles!

I had my ears pierced for the first time at age 30. I hate it and I barely wear earrings.

I have one tattoo, it's not Disney related, and I had it done at age 18. If I could go back in time I would not have done it. I really forget that I have it most days, it's concealed so I don't see it alot.

There was no option for "used to" so I said no to all.

But there was a time, way back when, when I had an earring in my left ear. No tats, though. Never liked them.

I had to look up "monroe"... you know you are over 40 when!
Only ear piercing here. I have the dilemma with tattoos: don't want them to show, don't know what to get, if it won't show - why bother?
During the summer I put little temporary tattoos on my feet sometimes.

I used to have double piercings in each ear plus a cartilage piercing on one side, but I gave up the extra holes a while back. Now I've just got one hole in each ear. I got a belly button piercing when I turned 18 because I just had to do something to mark my independence as an "adult", but I gave that up years ago. I have one small tattoo on my upper back. It's easily hidden, but has a lot of meaning to me.

I wasn't even allowed till high school to get my ears pierced, and so I only have one hole in each ear, but have wanted to get a tat for awhile now.

One piercing in each ear lobe only, for me. My niece has at least 3 in each ear and I'm too lazy to put so many earrings in every morning, as she does. :D Aside from a pair of earrings, I don't wear jewelry, not even a wrist watch. Just don't want the bother.

I think age has a lot to do with tattoos. They are much more accepted than when I was a kid - a few decades ago. None of the [grown] kids have tattoos, but several [grown] grandkids have. And of course several piercings, but mostly ears, and one [recent] nose piercing our youngest granddaughter got (first year of college ;) ).

I would go with a temporary tattoo but not a permanent one (kinda like nail polish - something that can be changed). Besides the permanence, I heard of a guy who was allergic to the ink. That would be me, waking up in the hospital. :jaw:

My husband and I think we are in the minority of people with NO tattoos.
Just not for us!

Guess we are plain folk! It's too permanent for me.

Just plain 'ole pierced ears for me.

One hole in each earlobe, done when I was in Jr. High. Were it not for my profound fear of needles, I'd have had them pierced again in College and would have a Thumper tat somewhere on me. But that fear of needles gets me every time.

I agree with a few others..no option for both..

I have my ears pierced..7 in my left ear..4 in my right ear along with an industrial piercing..

I have 6 tattoos..both ankles..left hip..and my lower back on the right side..and yes one tattoo is Disney related..just a little Mickey head!

Talking from a girl that literally cries when I have to get a shot, tattoo needles surprisingly do not bother me, took me a while to build up the courage to convince myself that it wasn't the same type of needle. And honestly, after five minutes the area gets numb anyway, feels like a bee sting at first then after that piece of cake. You should try a small one of these days and see if you can take it. That's what I did, I got a little tiny lady bug to see if I could handle it, after that it was a piece of cake.

I was going to change it after I posted with a "both" option but people started responding so fast I wasn't able to edit! Sorry!

I do have to chuckle at the people who have multiple piercings but won't get a tattoo 'cause they're afraid of needles. Whaaa? :silly:

Thats cool Aurora!

I am honestly more of a chicken with piercings than tattoos, they hurt ALOT more in my opinion, my stomach alone took 6 months to heal while a tattoo takes two weeks, at most.

I only have my ears pierced...but I have 4 holes in each ear. During my college days, my Mom told me that my ears was all I could pierce, nothing else! Well, I took it a little far! 3 holes in each lobe and 1 in my cartlidge at the top of my ear. That's about as "rebellious" as I got! LOL! :):D

I have 2 tattoo's, both not noticeable unless I'm wearing a skimpy tank top or bathing suit. I also have 2 holes in each ear, but I usually find myself only wear one set of earrings.

When I was in high school I had my cartilage on my upper ear pierced and my tongue pierced. Ahh rebellion.

I'm not a big fan of needles either and to me piercings hurt more then tats. Both of my tattoo's were barely noticeable of the needle. However with all my piercings I sure did notice.

I'll try not to be judgmental. Zero to both. Tattoos are permanent, and I know way too many people who regret getting them. I honestly don’t know anyone who doesn’t regret it. I hate jewelry. I have never worn a wrist watch (I have tried,) and I never wore my wedding ring (also tried when was ordered.) Earings on a women does not in any way ... I'll stop.

You know one person right here :) Tattoos I chose were big decisions for me, I never walk into a tattoo parlor and say hey see that satanic skull I want that right in the middle of my back lol.

One tattoo I have is a baby blue flower and a lady bug. The lady represents my Uncle who basically saved my life as a baby and who sadly died in a motorcycle years ago, he always said that when someone died they would come back as lady bugs to show you they were looking over you. This may sound weird but now it's a family omen of sorts. After he died, our house was infested with lady bugs, I mean like not one or two, but hundreds. Literally can't make this up. Then when my father passed away, the next day, house again, infested with lady bugs. Then when my cousin passed away, my aunts house was infested. Infested is a good term in which I am using it. So then my second tattoo was of a baby blue rose, my Uncle loved roses, so did I, my favorite color is baby blue, so it was a baby blue rose with vines around the ankle, with Tinkerbell (for obvious reasons) sprinkling pixie dust over three lady bugs that are on top of the rose, one symbolizing my father, my uncle and my cousin. So each tattoo I have is very meaningful for me, and in fact I am very proud of my tattoos. :mickey:

I'll sign down with Tink here, Scar, you know another non regretful tattoo fan here. I've always thought about mine for at least a year before I got them and they all have meaning, even one of mine (My first and the quality isnt great) I like that its not perfect, it symbolizes how I wasn't 100% myself yet when I got it, and all my others are super good work because I'm crazy picky about artists and such. But I def get people who don't want them, I just grew up with parents who both had them so they weren't weird for me.

At one point I had my ears triple pierced, but then I stopped wearing earrings. I also have 3 tattoo's with all 3 being on my ankles. The first is a heart that I got after my marriage broke up, because I still believed in love. The second I got is the tri-circle Mickey :mickey: in black, because...it's Mickey. The third one I got this past weekend after thinking about it for a long time. It is a cancer awareness ribbon for Leiomyosarcoma which I was diagnosed with in 2010.

Three piercing, one in my left earlobe and two in my right earlobe.

No tattoos and will probably never get one --- not because of how they look, but because I have a rare blood type and am a highly recruited regular donor! :)

Late to the conversation, but I have a single tattoo of a scorpion on my right arm. I chose that because my wife is a Scorpio. I had always meant to get my daughters' names tattooed on my other arm, but now that we're all older, I'm not sure the impact would be quite the same, and I figure the money could be better spent.

I also used to have an earring in my left ear, but the hole healed over a looong time ago.

That sounds like my tattoo!

Just kidding. No tats here, just a single piercing in each ear.

I think that I've mentioned this on Intercot before, but a few years ago I saw a girl with small tattoos on the inside of her wrists, which looked OK, and I considered getting something similar. Well I didn't, and it's a good thing that I didn't because not long after I got pulled over because I looked exactly like a 'wanted person' in the town next to mine. I was picking up some Chinese food and when I went into the restaurant there was one police car nearby. When I got out of the restaurant, there were two police cars nearby and they followed me to the point where I would have crossed over the border into the next town before they pulled me over. Long story short, they knew that I wasn't the wanted person because she had tattoos on the insides of her wrists, otherwise I probably would have ended up in the hoosegow in Little Silver, NJ. Of course, when I got home, everyone was wondering what took me so long.

Anyway, if I were to get one, I'd rather it be in a place where you can't see it, even when in a swimsuit, but someplace that gravity won't easily affect. But I doubt that I'll ever get one - rare is the tattoo that still looks good after a few years or decades.

No piercing and No tats...

Never thought tats were all that appealing...

My mom may have shaped my opinion as a child...

"When your 4 you would want a tat of Barney but when your 7 you will think why did I get that tat of Barney that was stupid"

it went something like that.

I guess the moral of the story was just because you like it today doesn't mean you like it on your body for the rest of your life.

I guess that has always stuck with me...

so no tats for me

That is so funny, Sherri! I asked to get double-pierced and my mom also said no! So when I was 16 and visited my sister at Georgetown in D.C., I got a second hole in my left ear. My mom was annoyed with my sister and me, but she got over it. And that was the extent of my rebellion too. I never wear anything in my 2nd hole either, but it is still open as well.

No tattoos. I might have considered it when I was younger, but I've never felt so strongly that I needed a visual representation of something on my body. Plus I'm not big on pain.
