I am finally getting around to doing our Christmas trip reports. I'm not even sure I remember what we did and when we did it, but I'm going to try! LOL.

We spent two nights at the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal before heading for WDW. I'll try to do a small trip report on our Universal part of the trip when I'm done with the Disney part of the trip.

Tuesday, December 20
Today we said goodbye to Universal and hello to WDW. Universal was fun, and I was surprised at how much we liked it there, but it felt oh so good to be driving through those WDW "gates". We did our traditional yelling like crazy when we drove through. We also played our traditional "what color monorail will we spot first" game. We each pick a color and the person whose color is spotted first wins. The person to spot the very first monorail, regardless of color, also wins. What we win? Nothing, but it’s still fun! We headed straight for WL and how lovely it was to be told "Welcome Home" at the guard shack. Ahhh, we are here!!!!!

As we got out of the car we were immediately greeted, by name, and escorted into the resort. This is a nice little touch that takes practically zero effort, yet makes the guest feel special. I have heard of other's being greeted, but it’s never happened to us before. I headed to the desk to check us in while Kevin and the boys hung behind. I had done online check in at exactly 10 days out and there was no line at all to check in. It was quick and easy! We were assigned a room in our requested location, but the room wasn't ready at the time. I was given the usual "we'll send a text message to your cell phone as soon as the room is ready", and we were on our way.

We drove to Shades of Green to get our military salute tickets. Anyone who knows the locations of WL and SOG knows that they are not very far apart. We actually got the text that our room was ready as we were turning into the SOG driveway. That was really quick, like maybe 5 minutes after I checked in. We hurried in to get our tickets and while there we ran into an old friend of ours from years ago. MY DH and this guy did a military training program together. We were in WDW right before Christmas 7 years ago at the same time as this family, and we haven't seen them since. It was amazing to run into them like that. We got to talking and that trip 7 years ago was at the same time of the year, they were staying at SOG on that trip, just like on this trip, and we were staying at WL on that trip, just like on this trip. Anyway, we got our tickets, chatted for a bit and then headed right back to WL to get settled into our room. I also wanted to note that for the first time ever there was no line at the ticket counter at SOG. It typically takes us almost an hour to get tickets here because of the line, today we were in and out of that ticket area in less than 10 minutes.

Back at WL we made our way up to the room, with the luggage following shortly. We started to do some unpacking then decided we were all getting a bit hungry. We headed to DTD. We decided to drive since it’s so much quicker than taking the bus. DTD was surprisingly not that packed. We did a bit of shopping. The boys headed to the sports shop, while I made my way to TrenD to look for the 40th anniversary Dooney purse. I found what I was looking for and my Christmas gift was the first purchase of the trip! After some browsing we headed for Earl of Sandwich. Even with DTD not very packed, there was a long, long line in Earl. But the line moved fast and we had our food, and a nice table outside, rather quickly. I got the holiday sandwich, which was amazing!!!! I don't really remember what everyone else got, but it was decided by all that mine was the best!!!

With lunch out of the way we continued shopping around DTD. The boys enjoyed the new Lego store. I know we made some purchases, but I really don't remember what those were. Today was such a beautiful day. The sun was bright and the air was warm and breezy. Perfect "Disney" weather, but not very Christmassy!

Back at the room I finished unpacking, while the boys watched TV and went back and forth between the room and "our living room". Our room was located on the 5th floor, just above the check in desk. We love this location because our favorite location in the lodge is the little sitting area on the fourth floor above the entrance. There are two leather chairs, a sofa, an ottoman, and a small fireplace that we consider "ours". Where our room was located we could take the stairs down one flight and enjoy our little living room. If the boys went on their own we could actually see them from our room door. While I unpacked the boys took books to our living room, and enjoyed being given the freedom to be on their own a bit. While at Universal Collin had taken Kevin's sunglasses into the pool and the nose guard had fallen off and we were never able to find it. Kevin called around and the Oakley store at the shopping outlet had the piece he needed. He headed there to purchase his replacement piece while the boys and I started decorating. Here is where all our good luck we'd had so far today ran out. Hahaha.

We got the tree up and Collin figured out the lights. I HATE dealing with Christmas tree lights. I was adding some little lantern lights. These are adorable. They are little old time looking lanterns with red glass covers! When I'd move the string of lights they kept going off and I worried that there was a short so decided to take them out as to not risk starting a fire in our room. Oh my gosh I could just imagine getting back to a burning lodge and thinking "oh my goodness, my lantern lights burned down the lodge". So my cute little lights got chunked! Then we had a wooden "cranberry" garland that I was putting in. The garland swung around, hit the tree, we heard a pop and all the lights on the tree went out. We spent almost an hour trying to find the burnt or busted light to no avail. Kevin got back and I was ready to throw the darn tree out the sliding doors. Anyone who knows me knows that I have to have a tree for Christmas. A little table top tree doesn't work for me. I had looked forward to decorating our room for so long and we couldn't even get the tree done! While the boys and I changed for our sleigh ride and dinner Kevin called around to try and find clear string lights for the tree. He located some, put the address in his phone and we were on our way!

We arrived at Fort Wilderness, hopped on a bus, and before we knew it my troubles with the tree were melting away as we strolled along in a horse drawn "sleigh"! We had candy canes, holiday music, and a nice warm blanket provided by our driver. The campground was covered in Christmas lights and decorations. Now all we needed was some cooler weather! It amazes me at the amount of time that is taken at some of these campsites. I have never seen so many lights and decorations in one spot! After our pleasant ride around the fort we headed back to our car and on to dinner at the Poly!

We were a bit early so we shopped around, then headed for the beach. This is probably our favorite beach in all of WDW. I don't think a trip goes by that we don't spend some time on the Poly beach. DH and I grabbed drinks at the bar and the kids played in the sand. We found chairs right by what was left of the campfire and enjoyed a view of the castle, drinks in hand! Ahhh, it doesn't get much better than this! The boys settled in for the movie that was playing on the beach and we just relaxed, taking in the feeling that we were actually here, while we waited for our ADR time.

This was the first time I've been to Ohana's since they moved the check in desk. I think it’s much better this way. It made the waiting area seem much less crowded. We didn't have to wait long and our buzzer was going off, which would be a trend for this trip. We were never seated after our ADR time. Shocking to me since we were there at one of the busiest times of the year.

We had a great table, the food was as good as ever, and we had our wonderful traditional first night dinner! For me this is when I feel like our trips have really begun, when we are at Ohana's on that first night. After dinner we took a spin on the monorail, another first night tradition for us. We usually try to stay to watch the fireworks, but we wanted to get to Publix for those lights and back to our room to finish the tree.

After a quick trip to Publix we were back in the room, decorating our tree, and finishing some unpacking. Collin retreated to our living room with a book, while Landon watched the Duffy show in the room. The kid is almost 10 years old, yet still loves his Duffy! The boys were bathed and in bed before I finished the tree. I kind of wanted us to all do the tree together, but in the end it was fun to have them wake up the next morning to find the room and tree decorated.

Exhausted from a very full first day I was so glad to go to bed. We've wanted to be in WDW for Christmas for a very long time, and as I lay in bed I still couldn't believe we had actually done it! We were actually going to spend our first Christmas, not only away from home, but in WDW!

I know we also spent some time roaming around the lodge today. I think the boys played in the arcade a bit, we visited the gift shop, and just walked around exploring all the little sitting areas and deocrations. I just don't remember where it all fits in.

You are off to a great start. Sometimes Christmas lights can be so frustrating; but that is all part of the holiday.

Not withstanding that darn holiday lighting problem, you really did have a great first day. Your family, old friends, a sleigh ride and Ohana! I sure hope the rest of your trip is magical, Denise! Thanks for sharing! :mickey:
