Anyone rent a car?

Has anyone ever rented a car for one day if you arrive the day before a cruise? I just checked and a one way car rental from Hertz was only about $60, which is much cheaper than Disney or other transportation, especially when you divide it by 2. If there were 4 of us it would be even cheaper. The Hertz rental location is only about 1.5 miles from the terminal, so if they can't shuttle us (some locations can) we can catch a cab. That would give us much more flexibility to sight-see and arrive on our own time and not someone else's schedule. Just curious if anyone else has ever done this and what kind of results you had. I haven't done that personally (I'm a "local") but I frequent a few cruising websites and it seems to be a pretty common practice. Most of the rental companies will also shuttle you to and from the port, too. Besides the cost savings, it also allows you to stop somewhere for last-minute shopping, which you can't do if you're using the bus.
