I noticed a post was closed. Why would the moderator close it?

Threads are closed periodically for various reasons. If a moderator closes a thread, an explanation as to why it's being closed should be included in the last post. The only exception to this that I can think of is when someone provides a link on a post to a similar, recently posted thread and the moderator then just closes the newer thread.
